Di you want full service, limited service, cafeterias, snack bars, or
some combination of those?

Full service and limited service would be best case. If you had all of
those you described, that would be acceptable.

I can point you to data for all major US cities that looks like this:

Miami Area:

							Number of
					    		Establish-
					       		Ments

Foodservices & drinking places 6,291

	Full-service restaurants 2,940
	Limited-service eating places 2,677
	Limited-service restaurants 1,983
	Cafeterias 200
Snack & nonalcoholic beverage bars 494
	Special foodservices 325
	Drinking places (alcoholic beverages) 349

It also include other information: sales, number of employees, etc.

But I do not have access to similar data for non-US cities. Your
call...do you want it?

I might be able to get this information for US cities (I have it for
states) but I'm not sure about the international cities. Will that
suffice?

The Economic Census 1997 last updated Feb. 2001 gives the American
information you are looking for
http://www.census.gov/epcd/ec97/fl/FL000_72.HTM. I have contacted
numerous international restaurant associations with no luck. I hope
this helps get your search started.

Dear Questioner,
I expect the international ones are not that
important to you but if you really need to know I can get Sydney and
Melbourne Australia, ( the two bigest cities in my country), without
too much trouble. In the meantime and from memory Melbourne with a
population of around 3.5M has about 2000 stand-alone restaurants that
are not part of bars/hotels or are not merely glorified hotdog
stands. I think this is what you are looking for yes?? no?? Sydney
although larger with 4,000,000 probably has a little less as
Melbourne is considreed one of the restaurant capitals of the world in
terms of quality and number. Anyway if you want further info perhaps
write back direct to john.birkin@auspost.com.au otherwise I will
assume, as I suspect, that the info is not that important.

Gotta go; getting hungry so off to our Chinatown just a block away
which has 60 chinese restaurants which the best chefs in China rated
as serving the third best chinese food outside of China. A city in
Canada came second but cant remember who was firs, maybe a US
city?????????????
