I would like a list of sperm banks and/ or fertility/insemination
centers/clinics (1) located in the Washington, D.C., Virgninia, and
Maryland area OR (2) serving customers/patients residing in the DC,
VA, MD areas (e.g., by mail, internet, etc.). Specifically, I am
looking for sperm banks and/or fertility/insemination centers/clinics
that are lesbian-friendly (either based on empirical or statistical
information). Detailed contact information, address (snail and web), and any
preferred doctors names is requested. Also any descriptive
recommendations or referrals by actual patients/clients would be
appreciated. |

Hello Gyrlout,
I saw a site mentioning lesbian friendly sperm banks and doctors, but
they seem to be all in the west coast and in New York. I found a
national directory of sperm banks, and several other sites mentioning
sperm banks in the neighboring states around Maryland (there doesn't
seem to be any in this state). Would this suffice as an answer for
you?

Techtor-
If the sperm banks, etc. serve the D.C. area and can be considered
lesbian-friendly (either based on statistcal or empirical data), I
would be interested in having access to that information. Of course,
it would not be a complete answer. I very much want to know what
fertiility clinics/centers in and around the D.C. area (say within 80
mile or so radius from D.C.) have a reputation as lesbian-friendly
(again based on stats [i.e., number of lesbian clients] or empirical
data [i.e., the personal experiences of clients/attitudes of staff and
doctors]).
Thank you for working on my question. I am eager to find an answer.
Happy Holidays!

Hello Gyrlout,
My findings were done with a different approach. I found websites that
actually say that the sperm banks and fertility clinics listed on them
are lesbian friendly. There are some clinics that do openly say that
they are "lesbian friendly". I assume you don't trust these? I'm not
sure if I can come up with something based on statistics or anecdotal
information, as that would take some time to get. But if you are OK
with what I got so far, do let me know. Thanks.

Techtor--
Thanks for being so perserverent. Are the websites sites for the
actual clinics/sperm banks or are they sites hosted by referral
services? And are any of the sperm banks and /or fertility clinincs
from the DC area (including VA and MD)? The reason I ask is this. In
my own research, I did find a site that gave referrals but none were
for clinics/banks in my geographic area. (I'm at work now and don't
recall the name of the website that I had accessed for this
information.)
Certainly, I'm not trying to be difficult but I am eager for reliable
information from a diversity of sources that I could not easily find
myself.
Happy Holidays.

What I found are in a way referrals. Not the websites of the clinics
themselves, but sites of other organizations, for example websites on
human rights, lesbian moms and vasectomy. They keep lists of such
sperm banks and fertility clinics since they recognize that others
like you will demand such services.
Well, there's a chance that the sperm banks/clinics nearest DC might
not be as near as you want. I'l mention some details. For example, is
Fairfax, VA near you? One human rights group lists a cryobank here in
its list of lesbian-friendly clinics. It has a website.
There're also two fertility centers I found in DC, though I'll have to
see if they are lesbian-friendly. I'll inquire, and when they respond,
I'll get back to you.

Sounds like your research is taking you in the right direction. The
website I had previously accessed on this topic is
http://www.lesbian.org/moms/drs_sb.htm.
Fairfax, Va. is nearby DC (approx. 30-40 minutes away).
Thanks.

Hello again Rochelle,
That website you just gave is one of the lists I found on the net. It
doesn't list the clinics and crybanks I found, so I'll take it out of
my research findings. I'll let you know when I find anything else or
get a response.

Hello Rochelle,
Sorry this has been taking too long. I just wish to let you know that
the fertility center I inquired at hasn't been responding yet. I'm not
sure if you're willing to wait, though I this center is one of three
institutions (including a cryobank) I believe might fit your needs.
This question won't be expiring until next year though, so we can wait
a bit for a response. I guess the center might be on vacation for
Christmas, hence no response. If you do want an answer posted now do
let me know.
Oh, by the way, Merry Christmas!

Happy 2004! I can wait a bit. Another avenue I had tried was the
Whitman Walker Clinic. Perhaps you might have more luck.
Thanks.

Hello Rochelle,
Happy 2004 too! I still haven't gotten any response from the fertility
center I inquired from. So that means I've still got only one
lesbian-friendly cryobank in Fairfax, VA, with two fertility centers,
one is transsexual-friendly, and the other is the one I inquired from.
I'll let you know of any further development.

Rochelle,
I forgot to tell you that the Whitman Walker clinic isn't in any of
the results I found on the Net.
I also decided to tell you now that I've had no email response from
the fertility center in D.C. I inquired at, so I guess we can consider
this fertility center a wildcard when it comes to lesbian
friendliness, but there's a chance it may be. It also has sperm bank
services. This is one of the three centers I know so far within your
area, and one is a definite lesbian-friendly center, in Fairfax, VA.
Would this be enough for you as answer? I'm sorry I couldn't see any
other examples, these few seem to be enough to service your area, so
there may not be any more.
