BibTeX is a program for creating bibliographies in the context of the
LaTeX text formatting program. Associated with BibTex is a standard
format for creating bibliographic entries, and specializations of that
format for particular types of documents (books, journal articles,
etc.).
There are a large number of BibTeX databases on the web (e.g.
http://liinwww.ira.uka.de/bibliography/). Unfortunately, these
databases were not produced by people with cataloging training, and so
use a variety of incompatible conventions on what information to
include, and sometimes even which fields to use.
I'm interested in getting a pointer to a specification by a librarian or
cataloger of how to use BibTeX in a consistent, sensible fashion. The
goal would be BibTex entires that are usable with a variety of
bibliographic styles, and ideally preserve information in a form that
could be mapped into other bibliographic formats.
