Was there ever a real life Katalin Helinszki ("The Hunyak")? 

Basically, I'm looking for the name of a European immigrant
(man or woman is fine) who was sentenced to life in prison or
execution because of their inability to defend themselves properly
(due to a language barrier and lack of money to hire a decent
lawyer or translator).

A less than ten word answer or a link would be great. I would prefer
that the immigrant be non-Italian (as I've found some Italian cases
already), and that the case be from the early to mid 1900's in the United States.

Update: I changed the topic of my paper to "Italian Immigrants;" So I
now have enough resources and no longer need the answer to this
question.
