I've suddenly begun to experience something I've never seen before:
when I reply to a msg in OE6, the left margin of the msg to which I am
replying "jumps" about a half-inch to the right. To move it back to
where it used to be (hard against the left side of the window), I have
to highlight the entire msg, then click on "decrease indent." None of
this occurs when I'm composing an original msg, only when I am
replying.

Hi Nautico ~

Try this to fix your indent problem when replying:

1. Click on Tools >> Options and then the Send tab.

2. On the Send tab you should see "Mail Sending Format"
and either "HTML" or "Plain Text" chosen.

The buttons immediately to the right read "HTML Settings..."
   and "Plain Text Settings..."

The HTML Settings has a check box for "Indent Message on Reply".

I bet that box is checked; and if you unclick it, that should
take care of your indent problem when replying to email.

I have no idea "why", but I have found that this occasionally gets
checked (perhaps an update?) and the indent happens. Unchecking the
box always 'fixes' it.

Taming Outlook Express seems to be an ongoing challenge at times.

Best regards,

Serenata

I, too, thought that might be the source of the prob, but it's not.
That box remains unchecked.

Oops!

I figured that was too easy ...

Try the plain text one, too ... I get my email plain text, and have
unchecked the indent, but unless I also uncheck the HTML email (which
I do not receive), it indents anyway.

Try unchecking the indent feature in both "plain text" and "HTML" for
reply, and then uncheck also the 'reply to messages in the format in
which they were sent'.

Sometimes just clicking on the "Apply" button and then the "OK" button
won't take until you either exit OE or actually reboot.

The OE settings are tied to Internet Explorer in some ways, so the
reboot seems to reset the settings.

Which OS are you using makes a difference, too.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks,
Serenata

You and I have been on the same page, as I had done all of the things
you last suggested, but with no successful result. I just did
something else, however, that did resolve the issue: I uninstalled
HotBar. Although HotBar had never caused this problem before,
uninstalling it proved it was indeed the culprit this time. Weird. I
may reinstall it just to see if it causes the prob to reoccur.

Hi again, Nautico ~

Just for the heck of it, I tried this little gizmo I found (trying to
see if there was somewhere else to 'fix' your problem).

It's called OE Quotefix ... here:

And some instructions for running it here:

And I like the automatic color for your answering (or you can change
it and use the coloring for the old text), but I sent it to another
user with plain text, and the colored text comes in with no problems.

It's worth taking a look at, and I'll check out the hotbar and see
what may have caused that.

Thanks,
Serenata

Just reinstalled HotBar and the same problem resulted in OE6, so
uninstalled it once again. Evidently that software has changed to have
such an odd effect on the left margin in OE6. I tried out QuoteFix,
but didn't care for it, so uninstalled. Thanks again for all your
suggestions.

Hi again ~

I see that others have had problems with Hotbar:

It's good to know about that. Thanks.

Serenata

Serenata, thanks for that interesting list of HotBar complaints,
though until now I'd never had a single prob with it. In fact, I
rather liked it. I remain mystified as to why it caused that margin
prob in OE6, but its bells and whistles are not worth having to change
the margin every time I reply to a message.

Nautico ~

I just wish I could find something similar for you to use in place of
Hotbar. Thanks for enlightening me - this has turned out to be a
learning experience for me, too. (I didn't even know Hotbar existed).

I'll keep you in mind, though, if something comes up.

Regards,
Serenata

Thanks, Serenata, though don't spend any time looking for an
alternative to Hot Bar. It's not that important.
