Hello blucken-ga,

I think I am within reach of an answer for you, while I have few
questions for clarification.

Do you have in mind particular types of matting agents? as this is a
term that could include various chemicals and substances. Are you in
fact interested in the figures for matting agents used as additives in
paint and other industrial coatings?

I can readily provide you market size data for miscellaneous paint
additives, that are not otherwise classified, since matting agents do
not constitute a specific standard industrial classification. Would
that be helpful?

That would be helpful - is that all you have though?
Matting agents like a Degussa or WR Grace silica product are examples
of matting agents for coatings

Hello blucken-ga,

Thank you for your clarification. I have figures for you, while the
main challenge with this product type is that it is best classified by
the use of
the product rather than as a particular substance. Some market research reports
pertaining to additives for paints refer to agents used for reducing
gloss, but they may not report separate figures for them.
Nevertheless, in this subject area are some residual industry
classfication subcategories that I believe are the most pertinent.

I shalll post for you figures of shipped products in U.S. dollars and
volume (gallons) in 2002 for the following categories:

Miscellaneous allied paint products (including brush cleaners, ink
vehicles, putty and glazing compounds, etc?

Pigment dispersions

Other miscellaneous allied paint products

These seem to be most applicable after eliminating other (North
American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes.

Another independent category, based on the substance rather than
product use, is called, "All other inorganic chemicals", and seems
the likeliest to pertain to silica gels after excluding most other
inorganic chemical groups.
I shall post the U.S. dollar figure in 1997, the most up to date that
are readily available.

Do any or all of these seem to be the data you need for this question?

I think we are on the right track here. The key is to identify the
key application areas for matting agents. For example, i have found
the following thus far:

1. Overprint lacquers and printing inks
2. Paints and Lacquers
    a) Coil Coatings
    b) Film/foil lacquers
    c) Leather coatings
    d) others

If we can identify what the key applications are and an approximate
market size, that would be excellent. I'm not sure what is included
in the data you have found. It sounds like everything is lumped into
a "catch-all" definition, but if we can somehow identify the leading
markets these matting agents are consumed in... that is what i am
looking for. Thank you for your help.

Hello blucken-ga,

Before looking into the market size for each of these uses, let us
confirm that it is just what you are needing. These figures would each
include products
other than matting agents and therefore be non-specific. The
categories that I listed are the ones that I think are the most
consistent with the examples you cited. Do you wish figures for all
possible uses of matting agents, or certain ones. If the latter,
please specify which.

Hello blucken-ga,

I hope my request for clarification was clear, but if not, please let
me know how to respond better. Mainly, I wish to determine if the
figures for a range of uses will be best suit your needs, or those for
the primary uses and substances will be better. I am prepared to post
the figures that I have as answer and fine tune it if necessary, but
want to be as complete as possible on the first shot, so that if any
modifications are called for they will be minor.
