Hello blucken -

Important note: If you choose to rate this answer, please ask for any
additional clarification or information you may need before doing so.
Thanks for your understanding.

There is a study published by Freedonia Research Freedonia Research
called "Sorbents to 2003", and it gives historical as well as
projected data for the sorbent market; its revealing introductory text
is the following:

"Sorbent demand in the US will grow nearly six percent per year. The
diaper sorbent market will be driven by an aging US population,
thinner diapers which require more superabsorbents, and the rising
popularity of youth training pants for later toilet training. Demand
for meltblown polypropylene will also do well, especially in
environmental cleanup operations. This study analyzes the $2.3
billion US sorbents industry. It presents historical data for 1989,
1993 and 1998 and forecasts to 2003 and 2008 by market (e.g., diaper
and incontinence products, feminine hygiene, medical disposables, cat
litter, environmental sorbents), and by product (e.g., polyacrylate
superabsorbent polymers, polypropylene sorbents, starch-based
polymers, clays and other minerals, cellulosics). The study also
examines the market environment, details industry structure, presents
market share data and profiles over 30 key industry players including
AMCOL International, Clorox/First Brands, International Paper,
Kimberly-Clark, Nippon Shokubai, Oil-Dri and VEBA. (212 pages)"

The study is divided up into sections that are purchasable for $30 a
piece. Amongst exhaustive data on the sorbent industry, the report
also includes sections that give market data information for specific
types of sorbents. You can check it out here:

I talked to Reg Daws, a representative at Absorbent.com, which
specializes in organic absorbent manufacturing. Mr. Daws estimates
the organic portion of the market is around $5 million. He says the
majority is synthetic based. This was an off-the-cuff estimate.
