How sure are you that the artist was German?  Could it be a painting
that is  located in a German museum (but painted by a non-German
artist)?

The painter is German and the Book is in German.  The book is in the
Kunsthistorische Institute in Florenz (The Art History Library).  I
have seen it and I have a photocopy of the painting and I need the
bibliographic reference which I lost
