Hello. I am looking for example magazine printing prices in the UK.

The style of magazines, in terms of printing, that I?d be interested
are The Economist, The Week, The Spectator, New Statesman, etc. i.e.
the flimsy weekly?s. I?d be interested in getting a ball-park figure
for that type of printing (with print-run figures). Ideally I?d like a
figure that includes both the paper costs & printing costs.

Why? I am currently researching a business plan to produce a current
affairs weekly magazine. Although I have calculated many of my
expected costs (editorial wages, distribution, computers, etc) I am
still in the dark over printing costs.

Because I still am not sure exactly how many pages I envisage my
magazine to be, or how many colour pages, paper weight, print run,
stitching, exact size, some example costs would be very useful.

I think it will be extremely difficult for anyone to come up with
meaningful estimates for you until you do decide on key issues,
especially print run and how many colour pages - and will these be
full colour or just 2 or 3 colours. It will also help to know the file
format in which you intend to supply the material to the printer.

Hi Tehuti.

I don't want to decide on key issues yet. I'm just interested in
finding out what other mainstream mags pay for their printing.

You may find this site useful.
http://www.ppa.co.uk/new_publishers/index.asp
"This section of the site is designed specifically for smaller
publishers starting out in publishing. The information was gathered by
the PPA Independent Advisory Council (IPAC), a panel of smaller
publishers with years of industry experience."
The guide covers:
Registering and protecting a title
Advertising
Auditing
Business expansion
Database marketing
Distribution
Legal issues
Interactive media
Production
People management
IT support

No costs are mentioned, but the production page has some very useful tips.

Hi answerfinder.

Yep, the ppa website is very useful. I'm afraid I'd already found it
though. I've already used its advice to register the name of my
intended mag. But I'll definitely be using its advice when I finally
come to get a quote. Thanks for the tip though. Any others and I'd be
very grateful.
