Every time I try to listen to streaming audio through RealAudio, or
play a sound file, I get "cannot open the audio device. Another
application may be using it."
I have done the following to try to resolve this problem - 1.
Installed different sound card. 2. Tried to update sound drivers
(they're the latest), 3. Killed any stray process that may be holding
up the sound.
I also noticed that the "play" button in Windows Sound Schemes is
grayed out - I simply cannot play the system sounds from that screen.
Any help would be appreciated.
To save time, please note that I've done some web querying on this error,
and got only the solutions I tried in the above space. |

The following will indicated whether or not it's a hardware or OS
issue (it can still be conflict with Windows Media Player or a missing
DLL):
1. Have you checked the Sound controls in the Control Panel ("Sounds
and Audio Devices" in WinXP)? There's a mute control there.
2. Have you checked the sound controls in the Toolbar at the top of
your screen (it's represented by the speaker icon).
3. Have you checked the Device Manager (under System in the Control
Panel) to see if any Sound Hardware devices have a yellow caution or
red problem icon next to them?

Greetings:
I checked those things out, and everything's fine.
No device conflicts, etc.
windows media player works just fine.
I can browse to a sound file and click on it, and it will play.
I can open up an mpeg movie and it will play in Media Player with
full motion and sound.
Please note the oddity of the "play" button being grayed out when I
tried to play the system sounds in the "sound schemes" control panel.

These PC software problems can be a nightmare. I've had conflicts
before between Windows Media Player and Real Audio (though on current
versions and Windows XP they are currently co-existing).
The best suggestion that I'd have is to try the Real Networks FAQ:
Real Networks
"Why do I hear no sound when I play files with RealOne Player?"
http://www.expressresponse.com/cgi-bin/progsnp/real_rec/srchjnnp?search_type=fdocument&search_input=rap00990updv.html&template=sos.html&session_id=
BTW, I tried to replicate your problem (greying out Sound Schemes) by
disabling audio. Though doing so will mute sound, it's NOT greying
out the Sound Schemes button . . .

Hmmm.... looks like this one is a tough nut to crack.
All of the suggestions mentioned by RealNetworks don't
work.
I sent them an email, but they take two+ bleepin' days
to get back to you (business days, at that).
I'm hoping that they may have an insight... but if not, it's
reformat/reinstall time... :)
