I'm having IMMENSE difficulty locating what I think is a simple,
logical piece of equipment! I would greatly appreciate help leading
me to the precise item I'm trying desperately to purchase...

I want to buy a hands-free kit (to install myself) to use my Mobile
Phone in the car. Before laughing at my stupidity for posting this
extremely obvious question, please hear me out! :)

The main principle is that I should only need to install an "outer
cradle" onto my dashboard for holding an arbitrary make & model of
phone. It should have a built in loudspeaker and microphone and take
12v power from the car.

Then (here comes the crunch!) I should be able to buy very cheap (e.g.
$10) interchangable adapters for different makes and models of phone.
These cheap adapters should easily clip into the dash-mounted cradle
and accept specific phone interfaces. So one day I can clip in a
Nokia 7250i, another day I can put in a Samsung whatever... and I'll
never need to buy a whole new car kit. (Nokia's car kit is about £110
(GBP) and you have to change it if you change your phone - how
ridiculous.)

So, THE QUESTION: Please can you find me a decent shop [on the web]
that really sells such properly-designed car-kits, as described above.
Note: I DO NOT want a so called "universal" kit which has a
manually-clip-on pickup which must be carefully positioned over the
phone's earpiece. I want the cradle to have a proper solid
good-quality connection to the phone's interface - and that part of
the cradle should be readily changable. It would be nice to also mute
the radio when the cradle detects an incoming call. (I have a Nokia
7250i, but I DO NOT want a phone-specific car kit)

In summary, my requirements are:

1. Holds a phone of arbitrary make and model.
2. Provides interchangable cheap adapters to interface with phone.
3. Has loudspeaker for hands free listening.
4. Has microphone for hands free talking.
5. Charges the phone from the car.
6. Has a TEL-MUTE output to send to the car radio's TEL-MUTE line.
7. Ideally spend £20-£65 (GBP).

UPDATE:

I have since discovered the BlueTooth adapters one can buy for the
car. These are in principle exactly what I want - since the
car-adapter-side would never need to be changed. However, my Nokia
7250i doesn't support BlueTooth :( So, I am still hunting hard for a
mechanical car kit with changeable adapters.

cmsdloma-ga:

Now that you have come across the Bluetooth car kits, you may want to
consider a Bluetooth adapter for your Nokia 7250i. It isn't cheap, but
it's an option to consider. Here is one example:

My apologies, it seems that this unit will not be available from Nokia
until some time in the 1st quarter of 2004:

To: aht-ga:

Thanks for that - very useful! I had no idea that such a gadget would
be released to Bluetooth-enable ordinary Nokias. When that comes out
next year, I might get the Bluetooth car kit plus that adapter - it
should future-proof me for a while :)

I'll leave the question "open" in case anyone out there happens to
come across the mechanical cradle-type I described.

Cheers.
