Question ID: 289413
Some time ago (10 years? the Wall Street Journal published an article
on a fictional (fraudulent) place called "Chanda-Za" (my memory)
filled with virginal school girls needing pen pals--and financial
support--from lonely men.

Looking for this article; I don't want to subscribe to WSJ just for a
single answer...

Can you help?

Thanks.

Hello.

Wow! You've got a good memory!

Two articles about the Chonda-Za scam did appear in the Wall Street
Journal, but they were actually more than 15 years ago (December 19,
1988 & November 22, 1988).

Here's a way that you can obtain numerous articles about Chonda-Za
(note that the first vowel is an 'o' rather an 'a'):

(1) Go to this Lexis-Nexis page:
https://web.lexis.com/LNE/ServiceSelection_en.asp

(2) Select the $2.50 per document rate.
Click on "continue" to bring up the search page.

(3) In the "search terms" box, enter: chonda-za

(4) Press the "search" button.

35 articles about Chonda-Za will be listed. Using a credit card, you
can purchase the ones that you want for $2.50 each. The two Wall
Street Journal articles are listed as "abstracts," so, unfortunately,
you're not going to get the complete text.

For greatest bang for the buck, you might consider the long 2656-word
article that appeared in the Chicago Tribune on December 19, 1988:
"KNIGHTS OF CHONDA-ZA A SEX KINGDOM'S MAIL-ORDER FANTASIES END UP IN A
VERY REAL COURT, By Wes Smith, Chicago Tribune (available as result
#18 in the Lexis search mentioned above).

A Google search fore "chonda za" locates one old Associated Press
article, but it's buried in quite a bit of gibberish. Use your
browser's "find" feature to search for "chonda" and simply ignore the
illegible characters:

Alternatively, if your public library has access to a newspaper
database you might be able to get many articles about "Chonda-Za" for
free. Again, it's simply a matter of entering the correct spelling
into an appropriate database. Contact your local library for database
availability.

You could also visit a public library that has the Wall Street Journal
on microfilm. Here are titles, dates and page numbers of two WSJ
articles:
CHONDA-ZA CREATOR, AIDE CONVICTED OF MAIL FRAUD
WSJ, December 19, 1988, Section 2; Page 4
LAND OF CHONDA-ZA PROMISED TRUE LOVE TO VERY LONELY MEN
WSJ, November 22, 1988, Section 1; Page 1

------

search strategy:
lexis-nexis: chanda-za, chonda-za

I hope this helps.

I have been looking for information on Chonda-Za, also. I knew these
people. I'm looking for anyone who might have pictures taken in the
early '80s, of Susan Valencia, one of the "angels".
