A correct answer consists of telling me the sequence I need in order
to install an HP 970cxi printer on my computer without using the plug
and play capability of the computer. I ask this because the plug and
play bios is damaged in my computer, and the HP manual for the printer
gives no options for installing this printer without the plug and play
sequence. Don't send me to the HP printer diagnostic page, I have
given up on that.

Hi tibiaron,

Have you tried going to control panel / printers then selecting add
new printer and pointing that wizard to the CD with the HP drivers on
it?

Let me know if that works for you or if you require more details on
how that might solve your problem.

Regards,

Thanks clsuseau. It's a computer problem. Compaq deskpro ep series.
The diagnostics say the plug and play is working, but it isn't. The
printer has no problem. I have been able to load the software on my
computer for all other devices, but the HP deskjet printer has a
sequence of loading which does not allow for manual load. It has to
be plug and play or it refuses to let me continue. The printer book
also says it has to be done plug and play. I'm sure there is another
way though, and that's what I am asking. The manual sequence you
mentioned refuses to let me load the drivers or software even though I
have the CD that came with the printer. As soon as I attempt, it
gives me a message: "Disconnect the USB cable power the printer down,
then power it up again and connect the USB cable and follow the
instructions." It always comes back to that same loop which my
computer cannot do.

Hmmm.

Have you looked in Device Manager to see if that shows USB problems? I
assume you have checked the BIOS to see that USB is turned on.

Which operating system are you using? If 2000 or XP, make sure you
"show hidden devices" while looking in device manager.

Let me know if this provides any additional clues.

USB ports check good. USB is turned on in BIOS. Op system is 98se.
My other USB devices function fine. No plug and play is the probelem.

I found a damaged file in the computer USB BIOS, so this question is
no longer relevant, thanks for the attempt to help. Have a great
Christmas season
