I'm wondering if such a device exists. It would be a stand-alone box
that answers incoming calls on a POTS line, records the message, and
sends it out via SMTP as a .wav or .mp3 file or some other common file
sound format as an email attachment. This would be a simple home
device nothing fancy or feature laden or exspensive, it would be
standalone like a normal home answering machine. I would imagine this
box would have a single rj-11 jack for the phone line and a rj-45 to
connect to the home LAN network. Call comes in, voice mail is recorded
and sent out via SMTP to a pre-defined email address. Optionally it
might have a memory card (like those used in digital cameras) to store
messages if the network is down.

I am aware of 100s of solutions available to turn a PC into such a
device. I don't want a dedicated PC as my answering machine nor do I
want to fool with software (or linux) so this would not be an acceptable answer.

I am also aware of the services available for a monthly fee that can
do this. I am not interested in paying a monthly fee for a service,
nor free services, no service solutions.

Does a standalone voice-mail -> e-mail home answering machine exist?

Hi stbalbach...

To qualify for an answer, does the
answering machine have to exist in
a retail sense? Meaning, do you wish
for us to produce a place that sells
[and has available] such an item, or
will producing the patent or product
info on such an item satisfy your
question?

It does seem as if you desire to
purchase such an item... and
I'd probably be right behind you
:-)

If it requires a retail store for
purchase, what country/currency
should it be available in?

thanks,
-AI

That is my hope that this unit exists commercially. It may not have
exactly these specs (it may do more) but it would be close. The
important thing being stand alone non-PC dedicated solid state box
solution for the home user, not a business class system.

I know enough allready on how to build one using Linux or a software
solution so I guess I really don't need an answer to that. It is very
possible such a commercial device does not exist in which case there
would be no answer to the question.
