Clarification of Question by blue_heron-ga on 27 Dec 2003 14:47 PST
1. Any interesting facts about this place?
A: The concrete floor can support a fully loaded vehicle. Used to
store huge rolls of newsprint stacked to the ceiling.

2. Does it have columns inside?
A: Yes, 3, equally spaced 5 m apart, down the middle.

3. Is the ceiling flat or pitched?
A: Flat

4. Is the hope to be eclectic, odd, interesting, high tech or weird?
A: The desire is to have 2/3 relatively conventional but with 'very
interesting' attention to details and the 1/3 balance as a completely
self contained guest suite with private living room, kitchen, w & d,
and 2 mezzanine bedrooms & bath following a whimsical/eclectic theme.
Main area great room to have a gallery library accessable by open
riser spiral stair. There will be cabling throughout for high tech
ammenities. Strong emphasis on some comfortable/ intimate areas. Floor
levels to be deliberately raised and lowered to break up lines of
travel & sight. Ceilings to be mixed depending on room floor area.
Floor finishes to vary.

5. How much is money a factor?
A: Mid range budget. Not into high end glitz or ornate.

6. Will I be given the house as a reward for making such amazing design ideas?
A: As this loft will have a guest area accommodation is negotiable.

7. If not, will another warehouse be designed for me?
A: Who knows what the future may bring?

8. Presumably the third wall is against another building, what do the
other three face? (streets, parks etc.)
A: South facing wall faces a water view over a park. Eastern wall
overlooks a parking area. North wall faces a street (this warehouse is
one floor up on the south, with grade level street access on the
north).

It would seem I am coming down with the flu, or I would continue
through the next 10 ideas. I am bursting with them. Then again I may
just be giddy with the fever, who knows.

Perhaps if I can't sleep, and if you think these are acceptable I will
add 10 more. Some of them are a little outlandish, but then again so
am I. I assumed money is no concern, I hope I was right.

1. Gigantic skylights for fantastic night views and storm watching:

2. A Single fireplace which is shared by four rooms.

Imagine a room 40ft by 40ft break that room into 4 sections each room
now being 10ft by 10 ft (keep in mind we are talking about a warehouse
so it can be

400ft and each room is 100ft)The central point of this room, like four
corners in the United States, would be a large stone fireplace four
pillars and an

open hearth. So each room has a fireplace.

The source of this is a ski cabin I stayed in, the fireplace was two
sided, one side opening into the kitchen, and the other opening into
the den on the

other side of the wall.

3. In a similar theme, a fishtank corner. A fishtank sharing a corner
of two or four rooms would provide each room with a fantastic view of
the tank. A

central aquarium tank is also a fantastic thought.

The source of this is my fascination with fish tanks.

4. Your own personal Movie Theater

Again, this is right out of my personal dreams, but imagine if you
will a 20 ft screen on which you watch your own movies, with a huge
surround sound system,

and instead of the quality theater style seating found at
marketware-tech.com, you put in big fluffy soft couches, and lounge
chairs and huge pillows. A

popcorn popper and video display system are clearly not out of our
price range considering the expense of the several hundred gallon salt
water fishtank, and

the 15 foot long sky lights. By the way, this room would have no
windows, movies are meant to be watched in the dark.

5. Collapsable walls/liftable walls. Depending on ceiling height, you
could enclose areas in a similar fashion to hotels, or broadway set
designs. Walls

could either come apart in three foot section and slide over to a side
wall for storage to open several small rooms into one large room, or
lift directly up

to all a larger space for entertaining, while maintaining a nice
warmer enclosed space for private time.

6. Since there will probably be more vertical space then hoprizontal,
space saving ideas would be next on the list. Starting with, each room
has a loft bed.

A small staircase in each bedroom leads up to a bed which overlooks
the room. Leaving a large area underneath for desk units or computer
station.

7. While we are on the subject of space saving, law office style
storage closets. If you have ever been in a law office, they have
rolling bookcases to

conserve space. Each shelf rolls back and forth until it meets with
the shelves to the left or right. Clothing storage could be done in
much the same

fashion.

8. A nice big hot tub and sauna in an enclosed wood and glass room.
Indoors for year round use.

9. Mandatory to run cat 5 in a newly built house these days, so the
computers can just be plugged in anywhere. Local hubs in high traffic
rooms for lan

parties, or guests with laptops. Perhaps a WiFi instead. Wireless
internet connection throughout the house.

10. Something I remember from a few years ago, always thought it was
the coolest idea anyone ever came up with.

No more draggin the vacuum around with you all over the house, simply
plug the hose into the wall outlet and go. No exhaust from the vacuum,
no dust flying

in the air as you go.

I was right on the money with my flu theory, I am sick, sick sick
sick...and I don't feel good either.

Here are five more ideas from a warped mind addled by time and illness.

1. Back to the hot tub, Instead of nestling it inside somewhere
hidden, imagine if you will a nice garage door, which opens during the
summer to provide a beautiful indoor balcony, with hot tub.(And a nice
sturdy railing of course)This would situate nicely into the southwest
corner based on your description, as it would be one floor up, and
have a wonderful view of the water and park.

Stolen from one of mtv real world episodes.

2. Since we are discussing the water and park, and we can't do
skylights, i'm going to say that the rest of that wall should take
advantage of the view, floor to ceiling windows. Perfect area to
entertain, so a nice bar and some big comfy chairs.

3. Sunken beds which can be covered during the day while company is
over, and/or sunken dens since you discussed different flooring
levels.

The bed idea is stolen from the Beatles, I think it was in the movie
Help!, i'm trying to find a picture now and can't.

4. Mame arcade machine. M.A.M.E. is an acronym for Multiple Arcade
Machine Emulator. Programmers have created software that allows us to
once again play the great coin op arcade games of our childhood. Space
Invaders and Pac Man are just the beginning. There are currently 2666
unique video game titles for Mame, and well over 4000 games. Most will
also act as an mp3 jukebox.

5. OK...As a tall guy, and a complete and total shower and bath
addict, imagine showering in this every morning. I would be late to
work...forever.

mother911-ga

Sorry to hear about your flu.

Interesting thoughts that you have posted. I especially liked the shower.

I'm going to be away for a few weeks. I'll close the question for now
and will call upon you upon my return.

Thank you for you contribution
