Windows 2000 has locked me out of being able to install hardware
devices on to my desktop pc. I can no longer pull picutres from my
USB Digital Camera ,transfer songs to/from my MP3 player or even
change the time/date on the system clock. I was able to do all of
these tasks without problems just 1 week ago. When I attempt to
perform these tasks I recieve an error message stating "You don't have
sufficent security privileges to install devices on this computer. Please
contact site admin or login as admin to perform".
I am the only user of this computer and it is not on any network. My
user profile has administrative privileges. I have also logged in as
administrator but still cannot access these devices.
I have scanned for viruses and loaded all Windows updates.

Please help!

Hello,

Seems a strange problem. What I feel you can check is whether you
account is part of the administrators group and also whether the user
"administrator" is member of the Administrators group. This can be
checked from Computer Management console. (Right-click on My-Computer
and click on Manage) Check whether the account you log-in as are
members of the Administrators group. (Typically Members of
Administrative group can perform the settings that you can't seem to
perform with your existing problem).

Make sure that there are no other accounts on the system that have
implemented any Security Policy. (May be some friend troubling you!)

Let me know about the above and then I can think of some other
solution if the aforementioned does not work.

The account I use is a part of the Administrator's group. I also
created a new ID and added that new user as an administrator to the
desktop pc but no luck....still refuses to all me to add device.

Are there any known bugs/viruses that could have impacted my PC in the
past to now "lay in wait" and cause this problem? I have removed
viruses from my pc in the past.

Hello,

I went into the Local Security Policy and reviewed all the current
"Enabled and Disabled" functions but I did not see anything that
referred to "Allow User to Install Devices". Only some policices of
allowing to add drivers. I think you have me on the right track but
not sure what Secuirty Ploicy I should modify.

Hi,
I dont think that your problem has anything to do with viruses.
Have you checked if there aren't any security policies applied to your
computer (as suggested by muhammad-ga). Since the error message which
you are getting is related with permissions, so what i think is that
someone has applied security policy to your computer and thats why you
are not able to install any devices. You can check it by the following
procedure.

Go to control panel, click on administrative tools. In administrative
tools you will find "local security policy". Click on "local security
policy" and check if some policy is not enabled.

The above will work if your computer is not a domain controller. If
you have made your computer a domain controller, then you need to
check the policies in the "Group Policies" option.

Do let me know if it works.
