I thought I saw on TV about eight to ten years ago a really cool
device the size of a small dishwasher.  At the time, it was being sold
only in Japan.  You fed household waste into it, shut the door tight,
and it would basically grind up the stuff leaving you with wonderful
compost, with little or no smell.
 I thought that this was a great thing that should be sold here, since
it would encourage organic gardening as well as help keep food waste
out of landfills.

It doesn't exactly "grind up the stuff", but it "quickly and
odorlessly prepares your organic waste into a high-grade soil
conditioner through the use of effective microbes".

It's actually not.  This was more like an under the counter appliance
that was electrically driven, as best as I can recall.
 What you did find was kind of interesting, though...
