Hi wwjd123-ga,
I own a GeForce 4 MX 440 too, and was facing similar problems with
another game 'Rise Of Nations'. This is how I solved my problem:
    > Updated DirectX to the latest version (9.0b)
               - Microsoft DirectX Downloads
                 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx?url=/windows/directx/downloads/default.htm)
    > Updated the display driver to the latest version. Currently
these are the 53.03 drivers from Nvidia. Shows up as version 5.3.0.3.
               - Nvidia Forceware Driver Downloads
                 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_53.03)
    > Download and install any updates available for your game. You
should check the game website to see if any new updates are available
for your game Tony Hawk.

Try out the above suggestions, and post here if they help.
If you need any clarifications, just ask.
Regards,
Theta-ga

I did have Direct X 9b installed.
I installed the new driver like you said and it helped but there are
still lines in Tony Hawk. It's playable but annoying.

disable v-sync to disable it rigth click and go to the property then
select setting under it select advance and then in 3d or open gl
setting and select v-sync to always disable.. if this doent help try
upgrading or degrading the driver.

When I go into properties and advance there aren't any 3d or open gl settings.
