Hi ppppppp-ga,

the medical/biological term for the area of research you are looking
for is "chronobiology" or "circadian rhythm." (Latter term refers to
the more or less 24-hour rhythm of many biological clocks.) It is
indeed a fascinating subject that scientists have been focusing upon
for a long time now, but that remains badly understood in many areas.
I have collected a set of links that will enable you to gain further
knowledge on this topic. You are right about the nose breathing, by
the way. This has to do with the fact that the mucous membrane inside
your nose swells periodically on either side. To apply this to
something useful: many people have difficulty breathing through their
nostrils because of unevennesses in their nasal septum. This is
objectified using a test that measures the flow rate of air through
either nostril while the other one is blocked. Before this test can be
carried out, it is inevitable to administer decongesting nasal drops
or something similar, otherwise the results obtained would not be
convincing whatsoever. But let's return to the link collection:

I hope that these links will help you explore this interesting subject
further. It is well worth it, in my opinion. :)
