The famous "Holy Roller" play from 1977 apparently required the NFL to change the rules: "But nothing could prepare Casper for the "Holy Roller," one of the most bizarre plays in NFL history. With the Raiders trailing San Diego by six points with 10 seconds to go, Stabler fumbled the ball. It rolled forward 13 yards to the Chargers' 11-yard line, where Pete Banaszak batted it toward the goal line. Casper kicked the ball from the 5 into the end zone and fell on it for a touchdown that gave the Raiders a 21-20 win. The NFL later changed its rules, prohibiting the offense from advancing a ball fumbled across the line of scrimmage on a fourth down." http://www.canoe.ca/Slam020802/nfl_hall-ap.html |
