Hi corporal59,

Has your friend considered a front pump oil leak? It is not an
uncommon problem in the BW 35 and if the gaskets, seal and o-ring
haven't been replaced for awhile, now would be a good time to do it.

SUBGROUP: Front Pump
MODELS: All Models Equipped With Borg Warner 35 Transmission
SUBJECT: Front Pump Oil Leak
"A number of cases have been reported where the front pump assembly is
replaced to correct an oil leak, when actually only the oil seal was
effected."

Subject: [rovernet] Re: BW 35 OIL LEAK
"It's not a hard job to change the seal, but it propably won't stop
the leak as the shaft is most likely worn. The way I stopped mine and many
others, is to remove the lever from the shaft and put an 'o' ring on the
shaft right up to the seal then put the lever back on and tighten the nut
right up so as the lever goes up to it's shoulder and sqashes the 'o'
ring. this will stop your oil leak. You can do this without removing
the gearbox or the exhaust, although it is a bit tight."

"Jaguars imported into Australia are also saddled with automatic
gearboxes, which further reduce performance. The old DG [Detroit Gear]
series box, which is really, a Borg Warner 35 series in disguise does
a good job but is very wasteful in power. They are also notorious for
developing oil leaks."

"Borg Warner developed the Type 35 (the three indicates 3 speed-there
was a later Type 45 transmission that had 4 speeds) for Studebaker and
American motors. This transmission was used in the middle 1950?s on
both these cars. However, by 1960 Borg Warner saw the handwriting on
the wall regarding these two companies (especially Studebaker) and
decided that if they were to continue to sell transmissions they would
need new customers. So the factory was moved to England and
arrangements were made with several European car companies to use the
Borg Warner transmission. Rootes was one of the first-offering it in
Hillmans, Singers and even the Sunbeam Alpine Series IV sports car
(not a new thing, Jaguar had offered a Hydromatic version of the
XK150). Soon Volvo and Mercedes Benz joined the list of customers.
The Type 35 automatic became one of the most successful automatic
transmissions ever made. It was still in use in the 1970?s and was
even exported to the United States where it was used in Jeeps."

I hope I have been able to solve your friend's problem but ofcourse
nothing can substitute for a good mechanic's evaluation of a vehicle
in his shop. If you have any questions, please post a clarification
request before closing/rating my answer.

Thank you,
hummer
