I am in the process of putting all my old hard drives together on one
machine to sort properly data gathered along many years. As a result,
I now have 6 HDs of variying capacities installed. This leads to some
problems as to figuring which is which.

I am asking you researchers to put your legendary imagination to work
and to see if we could find a convenient (and original) naming scheme.
Criterias :
-Drives (under Windows) have Letters C,D,E,F,G,H. It would be
best(mnemotechnicaly speaking) if drive name started with drive letter
such as Cobold, Dragon, Elf, Faery, Ghoul, Hydra or so.
-All names should belong to the same theme, category or genre.
-I'd like something Fantastic, Sci-Fi, Geek or historical.. hope you
get the direction.
For added lush points : What good names/naming schemes do YOU use ath home /work ?

Now what could be techier than the code name for chipset cores?

C: Convington (a cacheless or Celeron model Pentium II)
D: Deschutes (Intel's code name for the Pentium II -- part of its
scheme of naming processors after Oregon rivers)
E: Ezra (VIA chose Biblical names for projects -- this one for Cyrix's C3)
F: Foster (Intel Xeon or server version of P4)
G: Gallatin (0.13 micron version of the Xeon processor)
H: you don't need the letter H anyway . . .
I: Itanium (an actual released Intel processor positioned against RISC processors)
J: Jalapeno (early code name for Cyrix M3)

I'm into car names, myself... drive... car... ok, it isn't THAT big a
leap of logic! That said, my own volume names are rather boring... the
outcome of having multiple OSes and file systems installed, I have to
name them based on the bootable OS and the file system type or else
I'll forget!

North American brands (old and current):
CHEVY or CADILLAC
DODGE
EAGLE
FORD
GMC
HONDA

Science Fiction - authors:
CLARKE (as in Arthur C.)
DICKSON (as in Gordon R.)
ELLISON (as in Harlan)
FOSTER (as in Alan Dean)
GIBSON (as in William)
HEINLEIN (is in Robert A.)

And here's an article you'll appreciate:

Here's more LOTR suggestions
C - CirithUngor/Castamir/Calimehtar/Calmacil
D - Denothor/Deagol
E - Eowyn/Elrond/Eomer/elf/ent
F - Frodo/Faromir
G - Gimli/Gandalf/Gollum/Galadriel
H - Hobbit/Human

In the past we've used numerous naming schemes based upon themes for
server, network devices etc. The most poplular themes include
Mythology (Athena, Demeter, Zeas), Disney films (e.g. Jungle Book's
Mowgli, Bagheera, Baloo, Kaa, ShereKhan, KingLouie or Lion King's
Scar, Mufasa, Simba, etc). Planets are another popular choice.

My personal favorite is Bible characters or books
Using the books and some phonetic liberty -
C - Chronicles/Corinthians/Colossians
D - Daniel/Deuteronomy
E - Exodus/Ezra/Esther/Ecclesiastes/Ezekiel/Ephesians
F - Philemon (a cheat I know :)
G - Genesis/Galations
H - Hosea/Habakkuk/Haggai/Hebrews
I - Isaiah
J - Joshua/Judges/Job/Jeremiah/Joel/Jonah/John/James/Jude

Pick your theme (a favorite book or movie) and a quick Google search
can find the matching mnemonics you're looking for.

Hope this helps.
