Around December 6, my website, www.acmeliquids.com, disappeared from
the Google web search results listings for the key terms we are optimized
to attract, i.e., "Jittery Joe's Coffee" and "Thermos Nissan Mugs and
Tumblers" to name a couple. We had enjoyed first page search results
with these search terms, and similar search terms for months. At this
time, we have all but disappeared from any search results with
Google and Yahoo! for these terms among others. Obviously, we want to
know what has caused it. Interestingly, when our full URL,
www.acmeliquids.com, is
entered in the Google search field, it results with a link to a dead
URL, www.jitteryjoes.com, a URL parked at Network Solutions - and our
former URL before switching to www.acmeliquids.com back in June of
2003. The Google cache for our site includes:
(://www.google.com/searchq=cache:O9yNY3MIc5MJ:jitteryjoes.com/+&hl=en&ie=UTF-8)
and is, I believe, part of the problem. I can understand our rankings
dropping as listings change, but such an abrupt disappearance leads me
to believe that something else is happening here. Thank you for any
information that can shed light on what we can do to restore our
previously held search results. Eric Sales, Acme Liquid Supply

When I use the term exact term (including quotation marks) "jittery
joes coffee" on Google, acmeliquids.com appears at the bottom of the
first search page. Also, the term "thermos nissan thermos mugs"
returns acmeliquids.com as the only result. Are these search terms not
acceptable?

No. I used quotes in my initial posting to highlight the terms to you
- I apologize for the lack of clarity. Most customers don't use
quotation marks when searching for items we sell according to our
historical search data. If one enters the term - Jittery Joes Coffee
or Jittery Joes or Jittery Joe's - without quotes, you will notice the
absence of our site in the results at Google. Also, nobody searches
for Nissan products with the phrase thermos nissan thermos mugs,
although we do have that phrasing included in our home page title. It
is phrased within our web site that way to attract searches for both
Nissan Thermos Mugs or Thermos Nissan Mugs by placing the terms
together in such a way as to attract either - that is the theory
anyway. Again, our historical search data shows that very few people
use quotes in their searches for Thermos Nissan products. Before early
December, we had top 5 results at Google for the terms - Nissan Mugs -
Thermos Nissan Mugs. We enjoyed top 3 results at Google for - Jittery
Joes Coffee, Jittery Joes, Jittery Joe's - virtually any variation on
phrases for Jittery Joes product. Now we are basically gone. Those
examples, and the issue of our web address leading to a dead link when
entered in to the Google search field, we consider problems well
beyond the average monthly Google search result adjustments. Since our
site was launched in June 03, our Google search results for these
desired terms have steadily improved - until this most recent
development. Hope this clarifies the situation for you. -Eric Sales

The last site design change was in July. The last change to content
was December 03. Before that November 03. I typically make price and
product description changes monthly.

Just checked it today, 01-01-04, and see that the glitch to dead site
has been corrected. Thank you. Also read last night about major
algorithm changes with Google beginning in mid-November that sent a
large ripple to webmasters everywhere. The info I read said that in a
lot of cases the baby was thrown out with the bathwater, so to speak,
as this new ranking system was introduced with no warning. These
algorithm changes, more than any other condition, explain our
disappearance from the search rankings we have enjoyed for months. I
am frankly shocked that Google would make such wholesale changes
effecting businesses just like mine that had just collectively made
millions, if not billions, of dollars in operating and inventory
investments for the upcoming 2003 Christmas shopping season. In my
case our revenue from this year's shopping season compared to last
year fell by a numbing 50%.

Eric,

I suspect that all the dramatic changes associated with the Google
Florida update had a great deal to do with your site's change in
ranking. However, there is one thing that I can suggest that you do
that would probably dramatically improve your Google Search Results
rankings. However, I just can't ethically take $25.00 for that
information.

If you would like me to post that information, perhaps you could
reduce the price of your fee to $5.00, and post a Clarification here
stating that you would like me to do so.

Greetings, Eric!

Since one of the many things that the Googlebot uses to determine
"relevance" and "value" of a site is an evaluation of the other sites
that link to it, one thing that you can do to make a difference in how
your site ranks in Google Search Results is to contact the webmasters
or owners of the sites which still contain links or references to
jitteryjoes.com and courteously request that they change these
references/links to www.acmeliquids.com . Chances are good that if
they found the site worth linking to in the first place, they will be
willing to do this for you.

"jitteryjoes.com" -site:jitteryjoes.com
://www.google.com/search?q=%22jitteryjoes.com%22+-site:jitteryjoes.com&num=100&filter=0

Another thing you can try is to re-submit to Google all the
jitteryjoes.com pages that still appear in Google's cache with your
old website's information. Hopefully, this will cause the Googlebot to
re-index all of these pages and, upon discovering that they no longer
exist, this will cause it to remove them from its index.

"jitteryjoes.com" site:jitteryjoes.com
://www.google.com/search?num=100&q=%22jitteryjoes.com%22+site%3Ajitteryjoes.com&filter=0

URLs can be submitted to the Googlebot for crawling at
://www.google.com/addurl.html

I hope that you find this information helpful -- Best Wishes!

Hmmm -- that first link did not hyperlink properly for some reason.
I'll try it again; if it still doesn't work, you may need to cut and
paste the link in your browser's Address line.

Ace was very responsive and gave me a couple of very specific things
to do to help with my particular problem. The main issue, as it turns
out, was the recent Google "Florida" update, which has reeked havoc
with retail sites like mine and made the results from many Google
searches flawed to put it nicely.
