Hello gregoryew-ga:
Thanks to Temple University and the University of the Arts, there's
plenty of great classes for you to take!
TEMPLE UNIVERSITY -- CITY CENTER CAMPUS:
http://www.temple.edu/tucc/about.htm
COOKING CLASSES AT TEMPLE:
Temple offers a variety of non-credit courses through its Institute
For Continuing Studies:
http://mdev.temple.edu/tucc_nc/courses/view_courses.asp?Dept=1
and in that top box move the mouse around to bring up "Cooking And
Entertaining." That will bring up this page:
http://mdev.temple.edu/tucc_nc/courses/results.asp
where you'll find over a dozen cooking courses: how to roast, poach
and steam; how to make pasta; baking, how to prepare lamb and veal;
cooking with vegetables; how to get the most out of using a food
processor, and maybe you can work your way up to that class in Thai
cuisine.
ACTING CLASS AT TEMPLE:
Go back to:
http://mdev.temple.edu/tucc_nc/courses/view_courses.asp?Dept=1
and move the mouse inside the box to bring up "ACTING."
That will bring up a page:
"Acting
'What do you want and how are you going to get it?' These are the key
questions behind every performance. Through personal observation,
improvisation, script analysis and acting exercises; you will learn
how to make choices as an actor, broaden your array of tactics for
handling ?difficult? situations, work with a script, hold your own on
stage and get what you want.
February 2 through March 29 (No class March 8)
8 Mondays, 7:30 PM to 9:20
Fee: $175"
BASIC DRAWING CLASSES AT TEMPLE:
Go back to:
http://mdev.temple.edu/tucc_nc/courses/view_courses.asp?Dept=1
and bring up "CREATIVE ARTS."
This will bring up a page -- scroll down a little that lists courses in
"Basic Drawing
This course is for those who have never drawn before. First we train
the eye to see, and then we train the hand to draw what the eye has
seen. Learn to organize a drawing formally and expressively. There
will be an opportunity to use your new skills at a drawing field trip
to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
January 26 through March 1 Field trip: Sunday, February 29
6 Mondays, 6:00 PM to 8:00
Fee: $145
(Temple also has a Drawing II class, when you're ready for the next step.)

tour of the campus here:

This is the page for the school's "Continuing Studies" program:
http://www.uarts.edu/continue/edu/index.cfm
which lists, among other subjects:
Fine Arts
Illustration
Theater
If you click on "Fine Arts," it will bring up a pop-up box with a
lengthy list of classes, including:
"Intro to Drawing

structured guidelines. An introduction to the basic elements of

Clicking "Theater" will bring up:
"Acting for Beginners

If you?ve ever gotten the itch to act - now?s your chance! This
beginning class is for those who have an interest in learning more
about the art and the craft of acting techniques, or for those just
interested in having a good time. The class will involve exercises,
improvisation and scene work."
For these following resources, I worked with a map of center-city,
doing the best I could, but I can't promise you I didn't mess up! But
you'll know if I've goofed and listed something outside of the
center-city.
OTHER COOKING CLASS:
The Cooking School at J. Cabot Catering Company (which advertises
itself as being in "center-city"):
http://www.jcabotcatering.com/9.html
offers cooking classes in everything from soup and sauces, to
International cuisine.
Their "contact" page is:
http://www.jcabotcatering.com/8.html
I'm afraid the other cooking classes I found are outside of
Philadelphia city limits, in the suburbs. Philly has several culinary
schools, but those are strictly for students planning to become
professional chefs.
OTHER ACTING CLASSES:
The Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia (Old City, Philadelphia
-- so I'm not sure if this will work for ):
http://www.theatrealliance.org/news/2003_0903.html
has acting workshops: "salons" (one-night workshops) at $25, and
eight-week classes for $190.
The Triangle Scene Group has classes for actors, including beginners:
http://www.randomactsoftheater.com/Acting4Adults.html
Triangle Theater
1220 N. Lawrence Street
Philadelphia
between 4th & 5th Sts, just north of Girard Avenue [I believe that's
on the edge of center-city; I hope I have that right!]
for directions, go to: http://www.triangletheater.com"
Cost to audit a session is $25.00
Also from that page (which starts out by discussing the Greenwich Theatre):
"The Triangle Scene Group may be for you. The group is a new learning
collective for beginning and intermediate actors and directors
sponsored by the acclaimed Triangle Theater. In response to the
growing demand for classes with greater focus on scenes - the action
and reaction of multiple characters -- Triangle Theater is devoting
Monday evenings to a group collaborative process focused on developing
actors and directors through intensive work on scenes chosen
specifically for the members of the group."
OTHER ART CLASSES:
Fleisher Art Memorial:
719 Catharine Street [I believe it's Catherine & 7th or 8th St.]
Philadelphia, PA 19147
1- 215 -922 -3456
http://www.fleisher.org/
Click on "Workshops" in menu at left, to bring up:
http://www.fleisher.org/classes/
which will link you to "workshops" (which are free) and "Classes"
(which are tuition-based.)
Here's the "Open-Enrollment Adult Classes: (they ask that you pay a
$30 donation, plus you must pay for cost of the materials):
http://www.fleisher.org/classes/open.php
You'll see several introductory drawing classes listed.
Fleisher offers numerous workshops and classes, so keep clicking
around the site -- you'll find something you like!
This page:
http://www.fleisher.org/about/hours.php
tells you how to get to Fleisher, including by SEPTA from central
city. (I don't know how far this is from center city):
"SEPTA's Route 47 bus runs south on 8th Street from Center City and
stops at the corner of 8th and Catharine Streets, one-half block from
Fleisher. Route 47 returns north on 7th Street . . . ."
