I wish to use Google as default and when I enter that on Internet Options as well as on your home page, by clicking the request, it lasts only until I close out. As soon as I go to the desk top again and click Internet Explorer, another engine takes over as default and it comes up instead. What can I do? to insure continuous Google? | |

I use Google as my default search engine, If you can edit registry to these values you can set your default search engine to google. or else just copy the lines below into a text file and save it as "search.reg" . Then Double click "search.reg" to add these lines into registry. These registry setting are for Microsoft Internet Explorer. If you use any other browser let me know. <----------------Copy to a file from below-------------------------------> Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main] "Use Search Asst"="no" "Search Page"="://www.google.com" "Search Bar"="://www.google.com/ie" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL] ""="://www.google.com/keyword/%s" "provider"="freaks-ga" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search] "SearchAssistant"="://www.google.com/ie" <----------------------Do not copy this Line------------------------> |

This sounds suspiciously like your computer may be infected with a piece of malicious software that is "hijacking" you browser. Other symptoms may include your browser's homepage being redirected, and extra pop-up advertising windows. There are a number of unscrupulous sites which do things like this. One way to check is to find out the name of the search site you are being redirected to, then do a Google search for "<search site name>" +hijack. See if you can find any discussions from other people who have been affected. Chances are other people are suffering from the same problem. If you can't find any information, post the name of the seach engine you are being redirected to here, and somebody may be able to help. Also, you might try spyware and adware removal programs such as AdAware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) or Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/) which are available for free. They can solve many problems like this. |

I had the same problem. The site you are redirected to is hijacking your home page default settings. I am not technical at all. All I did was the following. Go to explorer. Go to Tools, find files or folders Put in the name of the site you are being redirected to Go to ?Look In? and click the arrow. Then select ?My Computer Click Find now Select all the files and cookies related to that site and delete from your computer. Then you can set google as your default browser again. |

I have a similar problem in that it works fine on one user account (using XP Home) but not on another - it doesn't redirect to another browser or search engine but the toolbar just disappears. It's still there on the view/toolbars menu but loses its "tick". Spybot hasn't cleared the problem, and neither has setting up another user account. Sounds as if hijacking isn't always the issue |

Removing your spyware infestation using Lavasoft AdAware is a good idea. Afterwards, a very easy way to secure google as your search engine is to install a free google toolbar from here: http://toolbar.google.com/ Not only will it give you to make google your default engine, but it will block all popups and add a small google searchbox to your toolbar. In addition, it will replace microsoft search when you misstype a URL in the Address pane of Internet Explorer. |
