Where do I obtain the statistic on the number of absent fathers living in New York City? I have tried ACS and other agencies. I tried to only obtain the number of fathers paying child support in New York City, but the info talks about the amount of money paid or the percent of increase or decrease in collections. |

Thanks for a challenging question. So challenging, in fact, that the next time someone asks a census question, I'm charging double!!! Anyway, the information your seeking is part of what's been published for the 2000 Census, which shows that there are more than 300,000 women in NYC raising children with no husband present. http://www.census.gov/prod/cen2000/dp1/2kh36.pdf Table DP-1. Profile of General Demographic Characteristics: 2000 Geographic Area: New York City, New York Female householder, no husband present With own children under 18 years 312,600 The table also gives other variants of the data -- total households with children, households with two parents, etc. so that you could tease out some other aspects of the numbers. Hope this is what you need, but if not, let me know and I can keep digging. Dave search strategy: went to www.census.gov and poked around! | |

Just to be picky, it's worth noting that the number of single moms is not necessarily the same as the number of absent fathers, both because one mom could have a child by more than one father (and v. versa) and because the fathers don't necessarily live in NYC. But, very few surveys ask whether respondents have children who aren't living with them, so the number of absent fathers is a notoriously difficult question to answer. It's made even more complicated by the fact that most "nationally representative surveys" don't include people in jails or other institutional settings, and a large number of men in jail do have children. According to ACS, the number of active child support orders as of July 2001 was 208,251. See: http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/acs/pdf/reform_plan_01_ch4.pdf I got this by entering "non-custodial parents new york city number" into a google search. This is almost certainly a vast underestimate of the number of non-custodial parents living in the city, since there are many who don't have a child support order. Hope this helps. |
