The word is not Thoneris but Thoueris. This is the Greek form of Tau-Urt or Taweret. Taweret was a goddess of fertility and childbirth and a protectess of mothers and children. She was often shown as a hippopotamus, standing upright, with a large belly, pendulous breasts and human arms and legs (or sometimes those of a lion), and sometimes with the tail of a crocodile. Search strategy: none. My main spare time interest is Egyptology, and I knew the answer to this query. Confirmation of my answer can be found at the Encyclopedia Mythica web site: http://www.pantheon.org/articles/t/taweret.html Images of Taweret/Thoueris can be found by using the Images search on Google with the search term Taweret: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&safe=off&q=Taweret&sa=N&tab=wi | |
