this item: 3 pc Rotary Tool Kit; it is being distributed in the States
by A J Wholesale Distributors in Long Beach, Ca, under code #

(www.shengshidagroup.com) Picture and specs of item in question is
available to any researcher

Item #CHIG40432	is a described as a GRINDER,CARVER,W/FLEX SHAFT (4/C)
http://www.ajtools.com/search.asp?sString=40432&submit1=Go%21

...Is this the tool kit you are referring to?

If it says "shengshida" on it, then I assume it must be manufactured
by the "Sheng Shi Da Electrical Group Co.", who are based in China.
The group specializes in wire, cable, power cord with plug,
connectors, household electrical appliances, lamp and plastic
pelletization.

They have a "Products" page with photos, but I didn't see a picture or
illustration that resembled a tool kit. I will contact Shen Shi Da
directly, to confirm that they are the manufacturer of this product.
As soon as I receive confirmation, I will let you know.

Dear Jackburton:

Please do not assume anything; we've been in contact with shegshida,
and they do not manufacture the tool itself, only the power cord and
plug.
Even though A J do not have a picture of it, it is the item we are after.

Hmmm. I feared that might be the case.

Are there any other identifiable marks on the tool kit?

No, no other markings or clues.
If you can use a picture of it, we can e-mail it to you

Have you checked with Harbor Freight Tools already? It seems the
manufacturer is Chicago Electric Power Tools but I've yet to locate
any direct information on this company. Maybe another researcher will
be able to assist you.

Nice lead, Viola!

I came across this message in an industrial tools forum:

"Harbor Freight are the folks to contact about Chicago Electric as
mentioned by others (1-800-444-3353 or www.harborfreight.com). I just
bought a rotary hammer from them because I figured even if it doesn't
last as long as "the others" I could buy 4 of theirs for the price of
1 of the "others." A calculated risk. Harbor Freight told me that
Chicago Electric is their own brand of imported tools. They are
essentially "Chicago Electric." They provide warranty service and sell
replacement parts. I found this by "chatting" on their support page
with one of the Customer Service Reps. -Cheers!"

Jackburton:

The item we are after goes up to to 23.500 rpm and retails for $
29.95; it has the same 3 components as the unit from Chicago Electric,
namely: main motor, flexible shaft with handpiece at the end, and a
variable speed foot control.
Please keep digging!

With Google Groups search engine, I was only able to uncover snippets
of information (of no real worth), which more or less say the same
thing:

...............................................

"Harbor Freight quality is terrible. Their tools are barely fit for the
intended purpose. They search the planet for the lowest
quality/cheapest price points they can possibly hit than they try and
disguise their tool's origins with names such as Central Machinery,
Pittsburg Forge, Chicago Electric to give the illusion that they are
from the good old U.S. heartland. Most of this Harbor Freight crap is
the lowest quality China is offering."

...............................................

"This is the Harbor Freight store brand. Avoid Harbor Freight at all
costs. Most of what they sell is total crap that's not even fit for
the intended purpose.

Harbor Freight grubs the planet for the absolute lowest cost without
any regard to quality. Then they attach names such as Chicago
Electric, Pittsburg Forge, and Central Machinery to try and decieve
the consumer into thinking they're getting good old USA quality."
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22chicago+electric%22+china&start=20&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=s6v7ru40ir8gheo23ncostr9oijkaq0u1v%404ax.com&rnum=29
...............................................

"BTW, Harbor Freight is sometimes called "Harbor Fright"- their quality
is a bit dubious, look carefully before you buy. Expect stuff that was
packed in crates China and not looked at until it shows up at your
dock. The pneumatic tools are generally better quality- made in Taiwan.
The brand names "Central xxx", "Chicago Electric" etc. don't mean anything,
they are slapped on the product by factories du jour in Anhui Province,
Taipei or whatever."

...............................................

"Don't buy from Harbor Frieght unless you can inspect the product closely.
Their "Chicago Electric", "Pittsburg Forge", and "Central Pneumatic" lines
don't come from some union shop in the heartland. Instead they come from
China or whevever Harbor Freight can grub for the lowest possible
cost/quality. Most of their products are so poor quality it's somewhat
entertaining to look at them.
...............................................

"I think the only exception would be air tools. It seems that whether you
buy name brands like Ingersoll Rand or Chicago Pneumatic vs. Harbor Frieght
they all come from the same plant in China."
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22chicago+electric%22+china&start=10&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=QCh33.2781%24y6.1709284%40WReNphoon3&rnum=16
...............................................

"Stay away from Chicago Electric!!! This is Harbor Freight's store
brand. They scour the lowest cost/lowest quality supplier in China
and slap a name on the tool to decieve the consumer they are getting
good old USA quality. (ex: Pittsburg Forge, Central Pneumatic,
Chicago Electirc)"

...............................................

">I see a lot of power tools offered for very low prices from a company
>called Chicago Electric. I don't know anything about this company. What
>is their background? Are they OK?

No, they're PRC -- in other words, China.

Every tool I've ever seen come out of China has been a disappointment, sooner
or later. As far as I'm concerned the label "Made in China" translates to
"Caution: disappointment ahead."

...............................................

I was hoping to get to the bottom of this, but so far I have not been
able to identify who is responsible for the manufacture of this
product. I hope the information I found is of some use to you. If I
hear anything else, I will you know.

Perhaps another researcher or commenter, may give us more clues (?)

I tend to agree with the Pakistani gentleman's remarks but it won't be
from lack of trying. If any of my colleagues are still working this
question and have any ideas, here's a list of Chinese exporters. I'm
looking at the Ningbo group but it's a total hunch. Good luck!

I am a businessman from Pakistan.
As "shengshida" seems to be a trade name of american
company therefore it is very unlikly that you can know
exectly, name of manufecturer. I sugest that you get
the technical specification of the tool kit and than
find any manufecturer how can make such kit as per your
requirement and specification. In my view you can find
various manufecturer in china how can do it.

Ijaz Ahmad
