Hi, it will help a little to know for sure if the mantle is all made
of stone (you say slate) and what exactly you are cleaning off of it
(dirt, soot, paint, etc.). Lots of options, but all are very workable.
Thanks...

Hi there, thanks for responding. Yes it's all made of slate, and I want
to clean off a build up of soot, dirt and what looks like a later
varnish type top coat (this could be the original resin or sealant but
I think this is highly unlikely as it is only on the lower part and is
pretty messy) without affecting the original resin. I know I may have
to reseal with something. Thanks for your help.
