How would you translate the term "überformt" as quoted here? (The rest is no problem, just this one word which I can't find anywhere).

Dear leander1, The verb "überformen" is not used very often. It would translate best as "to cover", "to overgrow", "to furnish with external forms". Basically, it means that something is covered and thus changes its appearance, both in a literal way (for example, a building that gets a new facade that complety changes the way it looks), and figuratively, for example related to ideas and concepts. (And many memorial places cover the original sites, as far as they are still existing at all, with cinema buildings and exhibition halls.) (Both genres of photography overgrow the individual image or self-image with a pre-shaped standardized image.) Using an online translator, I discovered the word "überformt" translates to "over-formed". As I do not speak German myself, I will leave this question to be answered by someone who does. |
