Hello:

I did quite a bit of research on this issue. Apparently, the answer
doesn?t look that easy. I have located a couple of very useful
resources and I counted around thirty Dukes in 1920. I am not sure,
how many total dukes were there. Although, I am very sure that I have
the entire list of prominent one?s.

Let me know, what you will consider an appropriate answer. In the mean
time, I will try my best to come up with exact figures.

Sincerely.
Leader-ga.

Hi there,

I used Wikipedia to check the current Dukes and whether they existed in 1920:
http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dukes_in_order_of_precedence

I then checked it against a list of all the dukedoms that have been created:
http://www.hulthenhem.se/peer/marduk.htm

...and did a few searches like [extinct dukedom] to make sure there
weren't any that the above sites missed.

I count a total of 26, if instances like "The Duke of Richmond, Lennox
and Gordon" counts as one. If it counts as three, then the total is
31. You can also add an extra one to either total if you want to
include duchesses as well.

The Duke of Norfolk

Bryan,

You missed a good opportunity for a bad joke here. If I'd posted this
question, rather than entitling it "List all the Dukes in Britain in
1920," I would have gone with "Put up your Dukes."

Well the good news is that this is becoming a list that nobody else
has bothered to create. Here's another Duke:

11th Duke of Leeds (1901-1963)

Lady Camilla Dempster, née Osborne (daughter of John Francis Godolphin
Osborne, 11th Duke of Leeds (1901-1963) and of his second wife, née
Audrey Williams) was divorced from her husband, the columnist Nigel
Dempster, on 28 October.

One Dukedom lasted for just one year:

"Henry de Beauchamp (1439-46), had grown up as a companion to the boy
King Henry VI. In 1445, the king made his childhood friend the first
Duke of Warwick. But he was also the last, the title dying with him in
the very next year."

How many Dukes in Great Britain at any one time?
http://laura.chinet.com/html/titles02.html

Here are two more Dukes:

Duke of New Castle
Henry Pelham Archibald Douglas Pelham-Clinton, 7th Duke of Newcastle (1864-1928)

1- http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Duke-of-Newcastle

Duke of Brabant
Leopold III of Belgium (1909-1934)

1- http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Duke-of-Brabant

Interesting Fact:

Duke of Connaught
Prince Arthur, 1st Duke of Connaught (1850-1942)
Bio: http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Prince-Arthur,-Duke-of-Connaught
This title was no longer recognized by the Royal family after 1922
although Prince Arthur and than Alastair Arthur Windsor lay claim to
the title until 1942. Both of them died in the same year.

Duke of York
King George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George), (1895-1952)

He was made Duke of York in 1920 when his brother George V was forced
to abdicate. For more info, please see
http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/George-VI

Duke of Edinburgh
No male heir was present in 1920 but the title was passed to the Duke
of Albany to retain until the new heir. The duke was portrayed as a
traitor in 1919 and the title again lay vacant.

1- http://fotw.unislabs.com/flags/de-sg%5Ed.html

Duke of Albany

Title abandoned in 1919. The name of the 2nd Duke of Albany "was
removed from the roll of Peers of Great Britain and of Ireland by
Order of the King in Council, 28 March 1919" for bearing arms against
the United Kingdom in World War I. At that time, the title was held by
Prince Charles Edward.

Hi, Leader

Very many thanks for your Comment.

I am rather dubious about the Duke of Brabant which sounds non-British
and distinctly Belgian to me.

George VI was certainly the former Duke of York but it was his brother
Edward VIII who abdicated in his favour in December 1936.

George V, who fathered both George VI and Edward VIII, actually lived
until Jan 1936.

1936 is a historic year because Britain had three kings.

Which proves that we should not always believe on-line sources.

Many thanks anyway.

In addition, the Prince of Wales in 1920, Prince Edward, was also Duke
of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay. (He went on to become King Edward
VIII in 1936, abdicated, and ended his career as Duke of Windsor.)
