It occurred to me that German citizens unfortunate enough to have a
last name of Himmler, Hitler, Goebbels, etc after the Nazi regime fell
would probably have wanted to change their last name pronto, even if
they were in no related to those monstrous individuals.
 Was this the actually the case?  Were people allowed to change their
last names in the immediate postwar years?

I don't know about Germany, but I read on a fact sheet that there were
26 Hitlers in New York City before WWII, and none afterwords.

Oops, sorry. I meant, that this is specific information on one Hitler,
who was the Fuehrer's nephew, and changed his name.
