I signed a lease after graduating college in my college town in Michigan. It is a year lease which was signed last August. In November I got a job 90 miles from my apartment. The landlord tells me I cannot get out of my lease. Is he right? I have been told that there is a law in Michigan that if you live more than 30 miles from your work, and you signed the lease before you received a job, then you can break it. Is this true? If so, how should I proceed? |

mcvetyty-ga: You may find some of this information interesting: http://www.umich.edu/~aatu/leases.html There may be a similar Tenant's Rights group in your town, I advise you to seek them out for more information. Regards, aht-ga Google Answers Researcher |

Does your lease allow you to sublet the apartment? I personally would go back to the landlord and explain that he can negotiate an end to the lease (one or two month rent upfront in exchange for breaking the lease) or he can try to locate you, to sue you for walking out on the lease and then try to collect any verdict he may or maynot receive and you will file for bankruptcy if you lose or you can have leasebreaking parties until you are evicted. In other words, does he want to make it easy and pick up a few dollars extra or make it hard and get nothing. |
