Hello mags311-ga,

I have found a number for the radar detector units sold in the US in
2003. I have also found the total US factory sales in millions of
dollars per year for 1998 through 2003.

However, I have not been able to find worldwide data.

If this information would be helpful, please let me know and I will
post it as the answer.

If you prefer, you can wait to see if another researcher is able to
find the worldwide data.

Hello mags311-ga,

An article at ?This Week In Consumer Electronics? gives the US radar
detector sales at about 1.7 million units in 2003.

?Radar detector sales are down slightly from last year, at about 1.7
million units, with sales expected to remain flat or up by a few
percentage points in 2004, said suppliers.?

Also, from the Cincinnati Enquirer:

?Blair estimates Escort sells about 25 percent of the roughly 1.5
million radar detector units purchased annually. The market is down
from its peak of 3 million units in the late 1980s.?

According to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA):

Digital America
Vehicle Security & Radar Detectors
http://www.ce.org/publications/books_references/digital_america/mobile/veh_security.asp
?Factory sales of radar detectors, which tailed off to an estimated
$134 million last year after holding steady at $170 million in 2000
and 2001, are expected to slip again to $123 million in 2003.?

I found more detailed CEA data at the website of the Hollywood Post Alliance.
