FLOPPY DISK RECOVERY:

How can I check or repair a PC disk? The best way is to use Norton
Utilities, which is installed on the PC at the front desk.

If that doesn't work, you could also try the DOS chkdsk command. Go to
a command prompt (Start > MS-DOS Prompt or Start > Accessories >
Command Prompt). Type chkdsk a:. This will run a very basic and quick
check on the disk. If it comes up with some errors, but says that it
won't fix them because the -f option was not specified, run it again,
but this time type chkdsk a: -f. (Or on Win 95-98 etc try ?running
Scan Disk)

Finally, you can also try reading the disk in a Mac. Since Macs can
read PC disks, there's a chance that it might work.

Microsoft suggests that you copy the file to your hard drive and try
to open it there.
If you are sending the floppy to someone, recommend they the same approach.
This may or may work.

Also remember that Micorsoft programs often save backup or temporary
copies of files
To the hard drive. If you are lucky. A search of your PC may turn up
a backup copy of the lost file.

Saving Files to Floppy Disks

Microsoft by the way recognizes that saving a file directly to floppy
disk can result in a
long list of file-reading errors when you try to open the file from
the disk. Most of us,
whether we save a file to a floppy or the hard drive, just use the
?Save? option. Microsoft says that when we save a fifle directly to a
floppy we should use ?Save
As.? On the street, though the word is that one should not ever save
a file directly
to a floppy, no matter which productivity program you are using. The suggested
route is to save the file to the hard drive and then either copy or
move it to a floppy.
and remember to not ever make a floppy the primary repository for files.

Recover Deleted Files From a Floppy Disk

I found this and it may save the day for you or be another dead end.
I have never used it and have no vested interest in it but it says it
can do it.

Note that if you use a program like this dont expect miracles.
However, if you have some really important phone
numbers/addresses/whatever you _may_ be able see and recover them
by using a text editor after the utility has done its job by
opening up the files it has reclaimed.
