Math wizard Jeff Weeks was featured in Nature Magazine because of his
research on The Shape of the Universe, i.e., dodecahedron (soccer ball
shaped), and I'm looking for a few public domain (royalty free)
visuals, pdf or tif, to illustrate this concept for an invitation to
his upcoming academic math presentation. I've already searched
"dodecahedron soccer ball" filetype:pdf (timeline Jan. 2003 or later).
I have not specified a category since this could be "science" or
"math" or "astronomy".

There are many nice images of dodecahedra online in .jpg and .gif
formats. Is it a requirement that you must have a .pdf or a .tif?

If you can make use of a file in .wrl format, you'll find one here:

Are these the kinds of files you're looking for?

Looking for tif or pdf, although jpg should also work. The visual
used on the cover of Nature, Oct. 9 2003 is probably best. Thanks.

Hello nowwhat-ga,

Here are some images to illustrate your presentation. It?s not clear
whether any of them might be available royalty free so I?m posting
this as a comment instead of an answer. Please let me know if this
information is a sufficient as an answer.

Since you?re planning to use these as illustrations for a presentation
by Jeff Weeks, you might be able to get permission to use the
illustrations that are included in the articles I?ve found. I?m also
wondering if he might be able to furnish you what you need since he
seems to present and comment on this subject fairly frequently.

Best wishes for what sounds like a very interesting program.

Circles in the Sky -- Detecting the shape of the universe
Thurston and Weeks were key figures in the development of a
comprehensive catalog of closed three-dimensional manifolds, most of
which appear to have a hyperbolic geometric structure. These weird
shapes can be understood in terms of three-dimensional polyhedrons
whose faces are glued together to create finite, multiply connected
spaces.

Hello nowwhat

I believe this is the image that appeared on the cover of Nature
http://physicsweb.org/box/news/7/10/5/polygon

It is credited to Jeff Weeks, so you could ask him directly for
permission to use it. Since you are producting invitations for a
presentation of his, you presumably are in contact with him already.
However, for the sake of completeness, I will add that Jeff Weeks has
published an email contact address for himself here:
http://geometrygames.org/contact.html
The address is in gif format, and I am respecting his request not to
repost it elsewhere on the Web.
