Hi there!
I'm a resident of Lucas County Ohio (Toledo, specifically), so I
placed a call to the Genealogy and Local History department of the
Toledo-Lucas County Public Library (419-259-5233) to see about chasing
these figures down for you.
According to the librarian, the birth records for Lucas County for
1928 are name listings only, with no totals - they'd have to be
tallied by hand (entries per page x number of pages), and still might
not include all live births in the county.
Alternatively, he suggested that I visit the Department of Vital
Statistics on Monday, to see if they may have an actual total
recorded, but cautioned that the library records were obtained from
the DVS, and he doesn't expect a total to be readily available for
older records.
If an extrapolation based on available records is acceptable, I'll hop
down to the Main Branch and count them up for you. Please advise.

The reason I asked this question is that I already have a copy of the
name listings from Lucas County vital statistics. I've tallied them
and the total seems too low to me. I was looking for independent
verification from census or other source to determine just what
percentage of actual births are covered in the listings indexed by the
Lucas County health department.
For what it's worth, the reason I'm doing this is because I am looking
for a lost ancestor who was supposedly born in Lucas County in 1928
but does not appear in the DVS listings.
It sounds like its not worth the trip down to DVS at this time. Thanks anyway.

hnw-ga,
Just a thought, but if you post your ancestor's name here, perhaps one
of the researchers can uncover some additional information about
him/her. But if you do, let us know what you already know about your
ancestor, so we don't cover familiar territory.

Hello Hnw--
I, too, am in the Lucas County, Ohio area and have a question for you
for clarification.
I have experience working with the Toledo-Lucas County Health
Department and know that this information would not be computerized.
The birth records would be stored on cards at the Health Department.
They would likely be the most accurate source of this information.
Regarding Census figures, this type of data is acquired only every 10
years. The U.S. Census Bureau may be able to supply you with
population and demographic information for both Toledo and Lucas
County in 1920 and 1930 but not 1928, as data is not collected in that
year.
My clarification question is this: You are looking for independent
verification of these numbers. What type of independent verification
would be acceptable as an answer?
