I am doing research for a book on the band Depeche Mode and I need
archived (year-to-year, week-to-week) international sales chart
information. PLEASE do not send me to billboard.com as they are
extremely expensive!

jackbox -

I need to know what countries you require and how far in time you need
to go back. Most archives I can find only go back a few years I'm
afraid.

Jon.

Hello - Here are the specifics: I need ALBUM chart information for
Germany and England between 1981 through current. SINGLES & ALBUM
chart information for FRANCE, same period. It would be wonderful if I
could get info for other European territories as well but these
countries are the most important. Thanks!

Hi,

I am from Germany and had a similar question, only concerning another
band. I can help you out with the "german" part of your question,
though not the "english" one.

The official charts in Germany are done by the firm "Media Control"
(http://www.media-control.de/charts.htm), that's why they are often
called "Media Control Charts". However, you usually have to pay for
their services. The magazine for the German music business
"Musikmarkt" is the orderer of these charts and publishes them in
there magazine.

At their website however you can access the Top 100 back to 1998
(http://www.musikmarkt.de/content/charts/charts.php3 - click on
"history) free of charge. If you want older charts, you can go to a
big library and look them up. I know that for example the "New York
City Public Library" hast the older issues in store
(http://catnyp.nypl.org/search/smusikmarkt/smusikmarkt/1,2,2,B/frameset&FF=smusikmarkt&1,1,).

Bye,
Robert
