Question ID: 295146
I ran across a stand-alone freeware utility a few months ago that
would scan a drive or directory and tell you the total combined
playing time of all the MP3 files. I can't remember the name of the
program and now I can't seem to find a trace of it now. Does
anyone know the one that I'm talking about?

I know that winamp and other players can calculate the time by loading
all of the files, but this was a standalone utility with only one
purpose.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi mavenz99,

I found this utility and would like you to read this excerpt from the
documentation to make sure this is the utility you are looking for:

"How does it work ?
------------------
You start off with indexing the songs into the app's database. You simply
point the application to a particular disk or directory and it imports
references of all VALID mp3 files from there. By a reference is meant all
the information required to ACCESS that particular file when required. For
this the application stores the following information to access the file :

[1] VOLUME ID of the DISK on which the file exists
[2] Path or directory where the file is lying.
[3] Name of the file.

Apart from the above it also stores the file's size, playing time of the
mp3 file, type of source (Remote, CD, HardDisk, ...), bitrate & frequency
at which the information is coded. The app associates a DISK ID with every
disk."

Please let me know if this is the utility you remember and I will post
an answer for you.

Regards,
rainbow-ga

Here's one more utility:

"A simple program to scan a list of (sub)directories, creating a
report from an HTML template. Also calculates simple statistics and
each song's playing time. Should work on any perl-ized OS"

The program I am looking for does not involve importing into a
database or creating any HTML reports. It simply scans and spits out
a total in HOURS, MINUTES, and SECONDS.

Thanks,
Matt

I found a program which I'm fairly certain is the one you're talking
about. It works with all versions of Windows, including Windows XP,
and it's Freeware. It may be executed from Windows simply by double
clicking on it's icon or it's shortcut. It creates an index of all of
the .MP3 files in a folder or on a CD-ROM, including those in all
levels of subdirectories. The index, when printed out, is handy for
use with a portable MP3 CD player, especially one which does not have
the capability of displaying the file names. The index includes the
"song length" of each .MP3 file and the total playing time for the
entire folder or CD.

Let me know if think this is the one?

Hi mavenz99,

Like I said, I'm pretty sure this is the freeware program you're referring to:

_MP3INDX.EXE

"[_MP3INDX.EXE] Creates an index of all of the .MP3 files in a folder
or on a CD-ROM including those in all levels of subdirectories. The
index, when printed out, is handy for use with a portable MP3 CD
player, especially one which does not have the capability of
displaying the file names. The index includes the "song length" of
each .MP3 file and the total playing time for the entire folder or CD.

_MP3INDX.EXE may be run from anywhere, including a CD-ROM. Simply
double click it's icon or the icon of it's "shortcut".

_MP3INDX.EXE [d:\Folder] [>"d:\Output File Folder\Output File Name"]

In order to include the optional parameters, simply create a text file
with a ".bat" extension and double click it's icon. Here is an example
of the contents of such a .bat file:

md "c:\My Music\MP3 CD Indices"
_MP3INDX.EXE d:\ >"c:\My Music\MP3 CD Indices\SPL-2003.2-1.txt"

Is a very good program for testing MP3 CDs, since it opens and reads
from every MP3 file on the CD-ROM."

I also came across "MP3-Mixer" (Shareware):

"You can select and highlight all the MP3 audio files ( or WAVs ) and
let the program calculate the total playing time ( taking the mixing
length in consideration ) so that you can match the total playing time
of 74 minutes allowing you to record it to a CD."

.............................................................

I hope this is the right program.

regards,

jackburton
