I want to define several styles in MS Word: for Theorems, Definitions, Facts, etc. (i.e. "proclamations" in the terminology of LaTeX) They will be similar to one another in styling; the main difference being the leading word. Here's the problem I can't solve: want 1) all of these numbered in a single series 2) Numbers to be {ChapterNumber).(ProclamationNumber), restarting the second number at 1 after each Level 1 heading. Example: Chapter 1. Definition 1.1. ... Definition 1.2 Theorem 1.3 Example 1.4... Chapter 2 Theorem 2.1 Definition 2.2 .. (A sample Word doc with the Theorem, Definition styles defined and used would be most helpful.) BTW. I am using recent versions of MS Word. |

I do have a similar doument. It will allow you to create a document in this form 1. This is Chapter 1 1.1 This is subheading 1 under chapter 1 (can be name of a definition) 1.1.1. This is sub-subheading 1 under subheading 1 (can be name of a theorem) 2. This is Chaper 2 The numbering comes on the left side. And, all the subheadings have the same style (but they can be changed trivially). I am not too sure if the numbering can be moved to the right side though. Let me know if such a document is acceptable to you? regards Chirayu |

Thanks Chirayu, but your suggestion will not handle what I need to do. I don't want the proclamations to be sections (then they ruin the outline, TOC, etc); also, need the numbers on "the right side", and need the numbering of the proclamations to continue increasing within a chapter (even in different sections or subsections) Thanks again Fred |

From bitter experience, I can tell you that it will take a *lot* of work, and the results will be unpredictable. If you have access to LaTeX or TeX, I would urge you most strongly to use that, rather than MS Word. It will save you a lot of time and heartache. As to how to do it in Word? I'm not telling. Mostly because I've forgotten all the details, and have no desire to remember it. |

Ugly hack but seems applicable. http://research.microsoft.com/users/jckrumm/Word%20Tips/technical%20publishing.htm#Numbered%20Equations You can probably create separate running lists by creating differently named SEQ fields (as described in the link). |

Thanks for your suggestions. The SEQ fields do the job for numbering and the document was helpful in other ways, but I've decided to take wengland's advice. Just too many mysteries. Painful as TeX is to use, it's better than Word (even with the "help" of MathType) |
