Hi Knowser!

Below you will find the results of my research for reviews of the
Mirra Backup System.  I am providing a short excerpt for each one;
however I recommend that you read each article in its entirety.

CNN Technology
Review: Personal server offers painless backup

?The Mirra Personal Server offers easy and automatic backups and lets
the user share mirrored data via the Internet.?

?The computer server, workhorse of the Internet and corporate world,
just got personal. And remarkably user-friendly.?

?Granted, the Mirra is not cheap. But I know no better solution for
hassle-free backups in the home.?

Extreme Tech

Review: Mirra Personal Server
By Loyd Case

?Setting up the hardware is about as simple as setting up most home
appliances: Just plug in the power cable and an Ethernet cable and
power it up. You don't need to connect a monitor, keyboard, mouse, or
other peripheral device. In this respect, Mirra is much like a NAS
(network attached storage) device, but it's smarter and easier to
use.?

(..)

?We're extremely impressed with Mirra's ease of use. Backing up your
files has never been easier because, once the system is set up, it's
automatic. Even saving file revisions is an automatic function, which
can be a real life saver. It's also terrifically convenient to be able
to easily access your files over the Internet without compromising
your actual PC system data.?

?When used in a multi-PC network, however, Mirra has some substantial
security shortcomings.?

?Nonetheless, Mirra is a very cool product for the tech-unsavvy user.
We set up several people with Mirra access, both locally and over the
Internet. They "got it" much more easily than some of the techheads
who've seen it.?

Pros: Dead simple to use; invisible, automated backups; Internet
access to backups; easy access to older file versions

Cons: Security limitations on the local network; no ability to
directly view file contents locally

Summary: The Mirra Personal Server is easy to install and use. It
offers automated file backup, maintains older versions, and can share
data with friends or colleagues on the Internet. It's really an
appliance, not a PC.

Mirra Personal Server M-120 review by PC Magazine

?The Mirra Personal Server is an affordable way to accomplish some
digital media magic that most users never thought possible for their
home networks.?

?In this first edition, some functions are missing. Tops on our list
is a Cancel button. To stop a backup in progress, you have to drill
into the folder using the bare-bones File pane, then remove the backup
folder from the list. Even then, the file being backed up will go on
its slow way to a folder that technically doesn't exist.?

The Holland Sentinel
Personal computer server offers painless backup
Mirra Personal Service doesn't need a network manager to work
By FRANK BAJAK
Associated Press technology editor

?The initial version I tested wasn't fast -- the company admits it
takes about 30 minutes to transfer a gigabyte of data, and I needed
eight minutes to restore a 220MB file to a new location. But the Mirra
didn't fail me in a month of testing.?

?And Mirra Inc. promises that version 1.1, due out Jan. 8, will be
faster and even easier to use.?

Things I liked about Mirra:

?When accessing it remotely you have the option of using SSL
encryption. It's slower, but offers security. Or you can go
unencrypted for faster download.?

?Because it runs on Linux, Mirra is not susceptible to Windows viruses.?

?It works just fine with firewalls.?

Mirra Makes Data Backup Easy
By Kourosh Karimkhany

?The Mirra is a bargain when compared to alternatives.?

?Sure, recording data on CDs is cheap, but it takes a lot of time and patience.?

?There are also tape and so-called network storage drives. But these
aren't smart devices and they demand technical manhandling. You also
can store your files at online data warehouses, but these storage
services are expensive -- starting at about $20 a month for just 100
MB of data.?

?The best part about the Mirra is that it's a snap to use.?

?The only gripe is that the Mirra is bulky and noisy, since it's
essentially a modified mini-tower desktop PC. I hope the engineers can
shrink it down in future versions. You also may have to buy an
Ethernet hub or router, as I did. A Mirra spokeswoman said the company
will revise its documentation to point this out to buyers.?

Review of Mirra Personal Server by "Small Business Tech" columnist James Gaskin

Small Business Tech: Mirra Personal Server shines
Start-up offers unique way to back up, share and remotely access data
By James E. Gaskin

?As a backup-only option, Mirra offers great value compared to tape
backup products. The Mirra 80G-byte version costs $399; the 120G-byte
version I tested costs $499. Plus, unlike tape, the Mirra backup
routines work automatically. Every time you add, change or delete a
file, the Mirra server reflects the change, but holds the deleted
files for easy restoration until you delete them. Since the most
common use of data backup is to restore accidentally deleted files,
this is a great feature. But ? and it?s a big but ?Mirra lacks any way
to store files offsite.?

Mirra Personal Server

?Security and privacy is one of the main features of this server.
What's more, the site constantly monitors the health status of the
device. It is the easiest way to protect files with remote access and
share digital files, photos, and email.?

Personal Servers - Act II

?Several limitations of the device are obstacles for me such as no
support for Windows 98SE. The Mirra server is a Linux box that
requires a client application to talk to it. Once connected to your
DSL router the Mirra appliance talks to the Mirra servers to allow for
secure remote access.?

Gizmodo: The Mirra arrives

?We've been playing around with one for the past week or so, and it
works as advertised (well, except that the first one they sent was
defective). It's been automatically backing up our documents folder,
and we were able to upload our MP3 collection and then access it from
a web browser.?

Plug and go backup/file server
?I'm also not too sure that sharing the files over the Internet is
actually a good selling point. Opening up your firewall and exposing
your most valuable files isn't something that should be taken lightly,
SSL and authentication notwithstanding.?
