I want to purchase a closet-rod cover similar to the one here:
http://www.vanguard-plastics.com/shelf/shelf643.html

I need to be able to cut the length to fit. And the closet rod itself cannot
be removed in order to add the cover.

If I can purchase the 72" cover shown for $60 or less, that will be
fine. All you need to do is find a retailer who will ship the product
to me in Los Angeles.

Hi redzinonly,

I have found two sites that might have what you need. I am concerned
about the price. One of the two sites I found, has prices
significantly lower than the price you are willing to pay. The site
will tell you, after you fill out a form, where you can find the
product locally. If there is no local store, the compnay says they
will sell directly to you. I am assuming they will then ship the
product, but this remains unknown at this time.

The other site seems to carry what you want, but you must again
contact them, both for shipping, and a price. They are very guarded
with their information!

Do either of the above sites sound promising to you? I was unable to
find any more online sites so far.
It seems to me that a large Lowe's or Home Depot may carry this kind
of thing in their brick & mortar stores. Do you only want to purchase
this cover online?

No disrespect intended, but what is wrong with the example you have
provided in your question?

I realize that this item should be a simple thing to find, Crabcakes.
I've seen it in home fix-it stores in the past. But now that I want
one, I can't seem to locate it locally.

The price is essentially immaterial. I expect it to be much lower than
the maximum I quoted. The product is worth more to me than it sells
for.

The sites to which you allude sound okay to me if they will deliver.
The example I cited is just fine. I tried to contact Vanguard Plastics
and all the Canadian retail outlets they cited with no results.

I would prefer to purchase online. But that's not important.

Based on my experience with these vendors so far, I don't consider
this question answered until the product has at least shipped.

Thanks for your interest.

Hi again RedZinOnly,

I just placed a call to Space Age Plastics, and a friendly woman
assured me they would ship to you in LA. The small catch is you will
need to order a minimum of 10 covers....at $2.00 each. Ordering 10
covers comes to $20.00, a third of what you found to be an acceptable
price. (There will be shipping charges of course).

This web site, Space Age Plastics, sells closet rod covers, in a
variety of colors, and states that they slip over existing rods
easily, and can be cut to fit with scissors. No tools necessary.
Lengths come in 60? and 72? . Prices are $2.00 for a closet rod cover.
http://www.spaceageplastics.com/product/rod_covers.php

The above site says by filling out the information form, you will
receive information about where to buy covers in your area. If no
local store carries this product, they will sell directly to you.
However, they told me by phone they will ship to you, provided you
purchase 10 covers.

This web site, Winsham , http://www.winsham.com/ seems to carry
the covers, but they seem to be very reserved about publishing
pricing, shipping, etc. They are located in Ontario, Canada
Picture of the covers can be seen here, on the last row:

I hope this meets your needs. If any part of this answer is unclear,

Thank you for that research.

It doesn't seem fair to change the rules at this point, but I forgot
to mention that the diameter of my closet rod is 1-3/8". That's the
size the Vanguard Plastics' cover in my example handles:
http://www.vanguard-plastics.com/shelf/shelf643.html

These other covers appear to be for smaller rods like those for shower-curtains.

I apologize for the oversight. If we could only persuade one of those
retailers in Canada to ship the Vanguard product, my problem would be
solved. That's all it takes for a correct answer.

Gosh RedZinOnly, I thought closet rods were standard size!

On the page I gave you, there are shower curtain rod sizes first,
then closet rod sizes, and they are 1 1/4 inch.

Then I remembered having to replace some rods in my last house, and
that the man at the hardware store told me rods were standard. I
searched many sites looking for a "standard diameter" size rod-most
sites that sell rods mention only the length, not diameter, which
leads me to think maybe they are standard.Perhaps you had your closet
rods custom made(??)

Here are some references I found that refer to the 1 1/4 inch sinze:

Brand Name Tools refers to 1 1/4 inch diameter:
http://www.brandnametools.biz/hardware/c/Closet_Rods/_1297137.htm

One site states "I like the 1 1/4" 8 foot closet rods the best"
http://www.geocities.com/edaskew/pushpole/pushpole2.html

This site also mentions "Closet rod is very good and is 1.25" in diameter"
http://home.indy.net/~rlafara/bobstuff/spool.htm

I have searched for more closet rod covers and was unable to find any
others. I tried calling Space Age Plastics, but I live in the Mountain
Time zone, and Space Age Plastics is located on the East coast, and
they are closed. Perhaps you could give them a call tomorrow and
inquire-the number is toll-free. (I'm hoping that the covers will
work, and that maybe the measurement works like a 2x4 lumber
measurement.) Finally, if you did not have your closet rods custom
made, is there some minor, *very* minor chance that your closet rod
was mis-measured?   :-}

I have remeasured my closet rod, Crabcakes. It is indeed a 1-3/8"
wooden dowel. I'm not surprised. This old pre-war house was
constructed out of heavy-duty stuff. The closet is a walk-in with
built-in drawers and cabinets. The rod is part of the built-ins.

And I supposed there is a reason that the Vanguard cover handles 1-3/8" rods.

Too bad somebody from Canada didn't chime in here. If they had picked
up a cover at the local store for me, that would have been the perfect
solution.

I have talked with Rob at Space Age Plastics. He thinks the 1-1/4"
cover might work without an unsightly bulging. So I ordered 10 of
them. I'll call this question answered, though I'm not really
satisfied.

On second thought: Before I rate your answer, I'll give you the
opportunity to figure out how to obtain the cover designed to solve my
problem - the Vanguard product. If you're finished now, just say so.

Hi RedZinOnly,

I'm sorry you are unsatisfied with my answer. Who would have thought
such a simple and basic item would be so difficult to find online?
Apparently Canadian closet rods are sturdier than the US counterparts!
I made what I consider an exhaustive search to locate the covers, and
was originally unaware of the unique diameter of your closet rod.

I further struck out by checking the DoAble site (The US side of
Vanguard)mentioned on the Vanguard site. I called to see if they made
US sized closet rod covers, but the answer was no. The third and final
strike was when I called the Canadian Home Depot number on the link
from Vanguard. They are unable to ship to the US.

I believe that the covers you ordered from Space Age Plastics can work
with no bulge. Since the covers are 1 1/4 inches, 1/8 of an inch
smaller than your closet rod, it seems you would have only a slight
1/8 inch "gap", which could be turned towards the back closet wall,
away from sight.

It must be frustrating to see covers in the size you need, but be
unable to obtain them!
Unfortunately, I am unable to help you get a closet rod cover shipped
from Canada. (I was unaware until you pointed it out, that Vanguard
was a Canadian company...there is no .ca in the URL ! ). Google
Researchers are prohibited from having outside contact with Google
customers, which means, even if a Canadian researcher could locate a
cover, it would not be possible for the researcher to ship it to you.
Here is the Google Policy regarding this kind of matter.

Tried pretty hard, but didn't really solve the problem. I believe a
solution is possible, but I haven't found it either. In fairness, the
problem was not properly described at the outset.

my local Target store has plastic SHOWER CURTAIN ROD COVERS that look
exactly like the website you link to; they come in dozens of colors,
are lightweight, can be cut to fit, and you don't have to remove the
rod to put them on. and they're CHEAP - for $60 you could cover every
closet in your house and that of your best friends! check it out.
