Hi tizzle,

I'm providing first a dictionary definition of the term American,'
followed by a few more personal and patriot type definitions. I hope
you'll find them of value.

According to Web WordNet --
http://www.cogsci.princeton.edu/cgi-bin/webwn?stage=1&word=american --
an American is technically defined as"

1. American -- (a native or inhabitant of the United States)
3. American -- (a native or inhabitant of a North American or Central
American or South American country)

In 1998, Edward L. Hudgins (director of regulatory studies at the Cato
Institute) wrote an article called "What is an American?" He includes
such observations as:

"An American is anyone who loves life enough to want the best that it
has to offer. Americans are not automatically satisfied with their
current situation."

and

"An American is anyone who understands that to achieve the best in
life requires action, exertion, effort. Americans aren't idyll
daydreamers; they take the initiative."

You can read the whole thing (it's not awfully long) at:

Here's another page with the same title. The information is apparently
written by an Australian dentist "to let everyone know what an
American is, so they would know when they found one."

Now concerning the above page's claim that this essay was written by
an Australian, I found a page that says it was written by an American.

"The "What is an American?" article quoted above was not penned by an
Australian (or a dentist), but by Peter Ferrara, an associate
professor of law at the George Mason University School of Law in
Northern Virginia. Mr. Ferrara's commentary was originally published
in the National Review on 25 September 2001."

Googlism.com provides an interesting (and sometimes odd) list:
