My computer has Windows XP with Service Pack 1 installed. Because I
was having trouble with pop up ads, I installed Google pop up
protection and turned on my Internet Connection Firewall. This stopped
all pop up ads until last week when I seem to have inadvertently
opened a door to my computer that had been closed. Anyway, now I?m
getting ads again. Someone told me to download and use Ad-Aware,
which I have done and used frequently, but the ads keep coming. The
ads have the ?HyperText Transfer Protocol? and do not seem to be
connected with any web page, though they usually arrive when I open a
new web page. Each ad has its box on the start line at the bottom of
the page. For example, right now I have a blue box at the bottom of
the page which says, ?Hot Stock Picks for You? right along side the
blue box for the New York Times. If I click the ?Hot Stock?? button
the ad appears. How can I get rid of these things?
Thank you for your help.

Download the free version of Panicware's PopUp Stopper and then return
here and let me know if it worked for you.

I downloaded and installed Panicware's PopUp Stopper, but it has NOT
stopped these ads from appearing. As I write this, there are five of
these web ads open--now six as another one has appeared which warns me
that I have tracking software installed in my machine. (I don't as I
run Ad-Aware several times a day.)

Postscript to previous clarification. I just saw something about the
Macromedia flash plug-in being used to produce ads. Anything to this?

I would try setting your firewall to restrict all traffic, and then
slowly over a few days enable each item again and see which the
culprit is...

Yes, I think the problem was spyware and I have finally eliminated--at
least temporarily--all spyware and the ads have finally stopped--at
least temporarily. Thank you for your help.

If pop-up blockers aren't working, the ads are probably not being
served by your browser. My guess is that you have a piece of spyware
on your system, and it looks at where you are surfing and pops up ads
independent of your browser.

Try Spybot also, see this answer:
