Hi,

I need some basic sources that give a historical overview of the
market for domain names. Please focus on the historical market, not on
the present or future market.

Things to search for:
* how the market has evolved over time; from the days when domains
were free, to the breakup of the Network Solutions monopoply, to the
present
* how the size of the market (total number of domains registered) has
evolved over time

I will give a tip for particularly good work.

Thanks!

<Domain names.

History - overview.

The Domain name system was originally a single file "hosts.txt."
maintained by Dr. Jon Postel of UCLA under a Department of Defense
contract. It became too time consuming to administer when the number
of domain names reached more than a few hundred.

In 1984, a new system was designed by Paul Mockapetris of USC. The
system was maintained under contract to the Department of Defense.

In 1991, the non-military part of the internet was made the
responsibility of the National Science Foundation.

In 1992, Network Solutions Inc was granted an exclusive contract by
the National Science Foundation to be the sole registrar for .com .net
and .org Top Level Domain names. They also maintained the central
database of assigned names called WHOIS.

In 1998 ?1999, this monopoly was dismantled by the U.S. Department of
Commerce and replaced by a competitive market. NSI?s contract was due
to expire on September 30 1998. On September 29 1998, the contracted
was extended by 7 days. On October 8 1998 the contract was extended to
September 30 2000 with the provision that domain registration be
gradually transferred to a new organization. This organization was the
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

According to an article by Scott Clark, by June of 1999, several
companies became domain name registrars including Register.com and
CORE. By January of 2000, there were over 80 ICAAN accredited
registrars, and about 100 additional CORE "Reselling Members"
registrars. http://www.domainnotes.com/news/article/0,,3371_350991,00.html
