When I copy a Word file from my PC to a floppy disk and then copy it
from the floppy to my laptop I am then unable to edit the file. I get
the message File Permission Error. What is the cause and how do I cure the problem?

Is the same version of Word installed on both computers? Or perhaps
there was an option checked on your Word on the PC that locked the
file from editing when it was saved.

Thanks for your response but both my laptop and PC have the same
version of Word and I often edit my Word documents on my PC. It still
remains something of a mystery.

Kind regards

Hi carlx,

Ok, I put on my jungle hat and ventured into the tangled realm of the
Microsoft Knowledgebase. I didn't find you an answer, but instead have
some questions for you.

1--What version of Word are you using?
2--Which Windows version are you using?
3--Which of the following error messages did you get?
There has been a network or file permission error
Check the file permissions for the document or drive
      Other?
4--Are you using encryption (Word 2003 only)?

Start Word 2003, and then open a new blank document.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
In the Options dialog box, click the Security tab, and then click Advanced.
In the Encryption Type dialog box, note the encryption types and key
lengths that are available on the computer.

5--And finally, at what point do you get the error? Trying to copy the
file? Open it? Edit it? Save your edits?

All these things matter as there are some known bugs (and
fixes)depending on what you've got running.

Let me know via Clarification ...I'll see what I can find.

Ugh. That is a pain! Microsoft is trying to save us from ourselves I think. ;-)

I've never been able to solve it directly, but have gotten around it
by opening the file on the PC, doing a "save as" onto the floppy disk,
and giving it a different name.

Or...if you can open the file from the floppy drive on your laptop,
try doing a "save as" from there and then saving it to the laptop hard
drive.

It's a bit messy .. but could work.

You might also try going into Word on your laptop and making sure that
the User Information is identical to that of your PC.

TOOLS--> OPTIONS -->USER INFORMATION

Good luck!

-K~
