I'm planning a trip to London and Paris in March of this year. I will
have to stay in touch via e-mail with my office in U.S. but (spoiled
by the convinience of always-on Blackberry on a seemingly omnipresent
Verizon network in U.S.) I'm looking for a similar solution that will
work in Europe (and in U.S., so it's not a throw away). Please find
out which of the available in U.S. mobile e-mail solution
(like T-Mobile Sidekick or Blackberry) will work in Europe (UK and
France). Thank you.

Hi! Thanks for the question.

Yes! T-Mobile has worldwide coverage with its Blackberry units. It
includes coverage in London and Paris as well. The T-Mobile sidekick
is not an option for you since it only has US based services. Other
carriers I checked do not carry the same Blackberry services as
T-Mobile. I will direct you to the product page of the T-Mobile
Blackberry section. You might be asked for your location first. You
will just have to indicate where are you buying the Blackberry
package. Once you get the Blackberry you can use it Europe or even
Asia through the T-Mobile Worldwide roaming features.

Thank you, but I'm afraid I need you to uncover a bit more depth for
me. Can you please explain what does it mean "US based services"? My
impression was that all T-Mobile devices use GSM and therefore will
work in Europe. Basically now I need to understand "why?". In your
answer clarification you can get as technical as you can. No prob.

Hi knowser-ga!

Actually it isn't a technical thing. When I say "US based services" I
assumed that it only has US based services and does not have a
worldwide roaming service. The reason for this is that basically on
its website only the Blackberry is shown as having global roaming
capabilities and not the the T-Mobile Sidekick.

Sorry for the misunderstanding in my sentence there.

Thanks!

Easterangel:

You are putting me in a diffcult position re: rating your answer. The
reason I'm choosing to pay for Google Answers is so that I don't have
to do the research myself. Unfortunately your answer was not
comprehensive, so I had to check the T-Mobile and then Cingular web
site myself. I found that not only T-Mobile has other product
offerings which work and do e-mail in Europe (btw, they call this
service "WorldClass") but that Cingular has similar service (including
the Sidekick-like Nokia 3300 phone).

Anyhow, I don't think I can rate your answer more than "okay". There
was very little research done, it was not comprehensive, you didn't
explain (even after my specific request for clarification) what makes
the phones work and don't work in Europe... I know that rating is
important for you so please advise how would you like to proceed...

Hi again knowser-ga!

In your original question, I was thinking that you were only concerned
about finding a carrier which supports Blackberry or T-Mobile Sidekick
services in Europe that's why I limited my answer to the T-mobile
vendor. In your subsequent clarification I this time inferred that we
had a misunderstanding about the term "US based Services. Anyway here
is an explanation why the Sidekick for T-Mobile will not work.

In the "How Stuff Works" website there is an explanation why some GSM
networks work only in the US and not in Europe.

"Unfortunately, the 1900-MHz GSM phones used in the United States are
not compatible with the international system. If you live in the
United States and need to have cell-phone access when you're overseas,
the easiest thing to do is to buy a GSM 900MHz/1800MHz cell phone for
traveling."

"How Cell Phones Work"
http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/cell-phone.htm/printable

The T-Mobile Sidekick is in the GSM 1900 Network.

Here are additional information:

"If you only plan on using the GSM cell phone outside of North and
South America then all you would need to purchase is a GSM
international cell phone capable of operating on the GSM 900/1800
frequencies. However this should not necessarily preclude a tri-band
GSM world cell phone capable of operating on the GSM 900/1800/1900
frequencies. Although the 1900 frequency is of no value outside of the
Americas you may want to consider a world phone because they are often
smaller, lighter and have more features. Further you may even get a
cheaper world cell phone that is lighter and smaller then a more
expensively priced international cell phone."

"A world cell phone is one that operates on the GSM 900/1800/1900
frequencies and provides the greatest amount of geographical cell
phone coverage possible. Of course the biggest appeal to North
Americans is the ability to use these world cell phones with GSM
network operators in the US, Canada and Mexico."

I hope that these additional resources will be of help to you. Thanks!

We are getting closer but not there yet. Again, from the original
question, I'm interested in the mobile e-mail solutions which work in
U.S. and Europe. Blackberry and Sidekick are provided as a reference,
hence the use of preposition "like" (or "similar to")... From what I
understand, mobile e-mail solutions require data service, so not every
carrier provides data service and not every phone supports it. I
understand that T-Mobile Blackberry will work in Europe. However what
I typically used to receive from Google Answers is a comprehensive
list of options for whatever I'm looking for. So, please provide a
list of carriers and phones which support e-mail in U.S. and Europe
(e.g. you didn't reply to my own find: Cingular/Nokia3300 phone).
Thank you.

Hi again and once more sorry for not fully comprehending the essence
of your original question.

The Cingular/Nokia 3300 isn't applicable for your needs since it
operates in the US only networks of GSM 850/1900.

Nokia 3300
http://onlinestore.cingular.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ES_PROD_PHONE_DETAILS.jsp?phoneid=205317&storeId=11551&catalogId=11551&langId=-1&storeAlias=sfrsfr&svcAreaId=SBC&subOrderId=1&isPostpaid=true

However, here are other alternative solutions for you from Cingular.
(Note: Just like the T-Mobile website, you will have to indicate your
location before they will show you their available products.)

Handspring Treo 270
http://onlinestore.cingular.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ES_PROD_PHONE_DETAILS.jsp?phoneid=108974&storeId=11551&catalogId=11551&langId=-1&storeAlias=sfrsfr&svcAreaId=SBC&subOrderId=1&isPostpaid=true

Sony Ericsson T616 World Phone
http://onlinestore.cingular.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ES_PROD_PHONE_DETAILS.jsp?phoneid=204322&storeId=11551&catalogId=11551&langId=-1&storeAlias=sfrsfr&svcAreaId=SBC&subOrderId=1&isPostpaid=true

Motorola V400 World Phone
http://onlinestore.cingular.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ES_PROD_PHONE_DETAILS.jsp?phoneid=295625&storeId=11551&catalogId=11551&langId=-1&storeAlias=sfrsfr&svcAreaId=SBC&subOrderId=1&isPostpaid=true

Other carriers seems not applicable to your needs since they only have
US wide coverage and if ever they have International services, it is
only available on cellphones' call and sms features and not applicable
for your email needs.

I hope that this has been of help to you.

Thanks!
