You can restrict incoming connections using ipfw, the IP firewall
program. You can specify ports and specific IP addresses (or ranges)
to reject or allow.

You can search Google for:
ipfw firewall

You can also type
man ipfw

under a Terminal shell. You must be very careful when configuring
ipfw, as it may destroy your internet connection by blocking
incoming/outgoing packets.

Is there a way to accomplish this without additional software?

ipfw should be included in your Linux distribution. You can find out
by simply typing ipfw in your Terminal and see if a "command not
found" comes up or not.

I did do that before I replied. I do not have the software. Thank you.

... then the answer is no, you cannot do this without additional software.

It is extremely strange that ipfw is not present on your Linux
distribution; perhaps you selected a custom install when you setup
your system, and did not put the ipfw package on. You may be able to
restore this piece of software from your original Linux CDs/ISOs.
