Hi taco45,

You didn?t specify price, so I am guessing you want the best scanner
you can get for the least amount of money! The scanners I list here
are the best I found, short of very high end professional drum
scanners. (I have listed some of the least expensive high end scanners
below)

I personally favor Epson scanners, but in aiming for imparitality,I
looked for others in my research. I didn't find any other brand that
that could compare with Epson. Epsons do a great job and I like the
interface, which allows me to control the scan if I want. On every
site that I checked, the Epson 3170 seems to be the model du jour! You
can lose a lot of resolution with 35mm slide scans using a low end
scanner--this is because the slide is not sitting directly on the
glass. Using a good scanner with the highest resolution you can find
will help keep your scans and prints looking sharp and clear.

Epson 3170 and the Hewlett-Packard Scanjet 5530, both were highly
rated by PC World Magazine, with the Epson slightly edging out the HP
model. The Epson scanner had an automatic dust removal tool, and did a
great job of cleaning up the review author?s slides.
??for scanning slides, the HP and Epson models have a major advantage
over Microtek's scanner: They let you scan batches of slides at once;
the ScanMaker i300 manages only a single slide at a time? The Epson
3170 has a higher resolution, 3200 dots per inch x 6400, which allows
you to make sharp enlargements. You can scan 4 slides at a time with
the Epson 3170.

The Epson retails for about $200 USD. Compare prices for the Epson here:

Epson 1670
?Convenient built-in 35 mm slide and film strip adapter for scanning
multiple slides and negatives? . This model is a little less, but
appears to be less automatic too! It scans two slides at a time.

For a lot of money (Over $400 USD), you can get one of these scanners:

Hi taco45, You posted a clarification while I was working on your
answer, and I did not see it untill later.

Did you need information on scanners over $400? To scan stacks of
slides, I beleive you will be looking at even more than $400, possibly
up to $4,000.

If you need more information, please let me know.

I found this Nikon scanner that will automatically feed up to 50
slides at a time, with an adapter. $1400 USD

Taco45,

I found another scanner - but this is one to avoid! As I read the
review, the resolution seemed entirely too poor. Then I read the
customer comments! Stay away from this one!

Here's another high-end Minolta, that does batch scanning, for around
$800, and excellent resolution!

As a photographer, I'd like to strongly urge against using a flatbed
scanner to scan film or slides. Since they are intended primarily for
other purposes, they give up too much when adapted for this use. A
dedicated slide/film scanner is the best way to go. I can recommend
to you the Minolta Dimage Scan Dual III as the best scanner under
$300. For more expensive scanners look at Nikon.

Good luck.

Hi
I have a Canon 8000F scanner (high end home scanner). Very happy with
the scanner it's easy to use and fast. Good software.
It scans in colour slides and strips of negative several at a time, I
did some slides in it that were previously scanned in much more
expensive dedicated slide scanner. I could not tell the difference
between the two. For home use, it's fine.
As leoj-ga said they are a compromise though, probably not suited to pro use.
