I know how to put the slide number on a PowerPoint slide master by
using Insert -> Slide Number. This item shows up as the number of the
current slide.

What I'd like to do is to have the slide number show "m of n" where
"m" is the current slide number and "n" is the number of the last
slide in the document. I'd rather have "n" as the last slide rather
than the total number of slides since I explicitly set the slide
number of the first slide after the title slide to "1".

Is there a smarter way to do this than just hard-coding the number
into the slide master and changing it if I add or remove slides?

QJB --

As I'm sure that you're aware, there are now so many different
versions of Powerpoint that it's sometimes hard to know what precise
features are available.

My version, under Office XP, allows for page numbers (View/Header &
Footer) -- but not page 1 of n.

I recall earlier versions offering to print pages in that format --
but not even the handouts allow page numbering that way in the current
version.

Best regards,

Good point -- I have clarified my question by pointing out the version: Office 2000.

qjb-ga,

Adding a "page m of n" footer to each slide could certainly be done
using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) code.

If you find no non-code solutions, you may want to rephrase your
question to ask specifically about VBA code plug-ins to add "page m of
n" to your slides.
